Junior B’s:

Our Junior B’s had a must win championship match against Glin on Saturday evening last in Abbeyfeale. Things did not go our way in the first half as the opposition threatened our goals with every attack. Glin scored four goals and two points to Athea’s one goal and three points. A wonderful goal from Pa Kiely and three points from the boot of Chris Hayes kept us in touch. Glin went eleven points up early in the second half when they scored their fifth goal of the match. This seemed to wake up our boys, Chris Hayes rose the white flag before Pa Kiely’s second goal meant that a come back was on the cards.

A point for Pa Kiely was followed by the score of the match when Paul Matthews pointed from a difficult angle way out on the wing. In the hot humid evening Denis Greaney was busy supplying water to all players on the field. Sean Ahern continued the come back with a point as did Patrick Horgan(Navan) who was just after coming on as a substitute. With just a goal between the teams a long ball in from Sean Ahern was fisted to the back of the net by Patrick Horgan to level the match. Athea pressed for a winner but our attack broke down, Glin broke up the field and were awarded a free in front of the posts which they converted to win the match by a point. The final score ended Athea 3–8, Glin 5–3.

U16:

Our U16s took on Adare in Páirc na nGael on Monday evening last. It was their game for a number of weeks and we got off to a great start when James Ryan’s goal bound shot rattled the crossbar which went over for a point. James added two more points from frees, before Sean Ryan scored a great point to put us four points up. Adare responded with a point but once again  the very impressive James Ryan rose the white flag. A goal each for Brian Sheahan and James Ryan left us with a comfortable lead mid-way through the first half. Then the visitors hit a purple patch scoring a goal and six points to our single James Ryan point to leave us just three points ahead at the break. Adare opened the scoring in the second half with a point, but a point from James Ryan and a super free from Padraic Walsh put us four points up. Adare then scored a goal to come within one point of Athea, they continued to push but our half-back line of Jason Kelly, Tommy Quaid and Killian O’ Donoghue were up for the challenge. Brian O’ Connor was having a super game at mid-field and William Sexton was a constant thorn in Adare’s side through-out the whole match.

Two fantastic points from Sean Ryan put us three ahead mid-way though the half. Adare reduced the lead to a single point again and Lorcan McAuliffe who had a fine game in goals made a crucial save at this stage of the match. The true character of this team shone out with everyone giving it their all and we went three points ahead again thanks to James Ryan and Padraic Walsh and this gave us a bit of breathing space. Adare did not give up and they scored two late points but our boys held on for a great win and one which they thoroughly deserved.

Team: Lorcan McAuliffe, Padraig O’ Sullivan, Jason Dalton, Conor Fitzgerald, Tony McAuliffe, Tommy Quaid, Killian O’ Donoghue, Padraic Walsh, Brian O’ Connor, Jason Kelly, Jack Denihan, William Sexton, Sean Ryan, James Ryan & Brian Sheahan.

Athea United Soccer

VICTORY SOCIAL A SIMPLY OUTSTANDING NIGHT
Athea Utd had a great season at junior level and we capped it off with a brilliantly successful Victory Social at The Devon Inn last Friday night. It was an unprecedented season at junior level with our As winning Div 1 for the very first time while the Bs followed their title winning success in 2012 when doing the league and cup double in 2013. On the night the As and Bs were presented with their winning medals while we also had the A and B players of the year plus goal of the season for each and they are as follows – A player of the year Gerard Ahern, B player of the year Mike McCarthy. A goal of the season Padraig Reidy v Rockhill Rovers (home game). B goal of the season Steven McEnery v Ferry Rangers (away game). The club also made presentations to the respective junior managers PJ Kinsella & Chris Hayes (As) and Bobby Barrett & Paudie Lynch (Bs) in recognition of their efforts over the course of the season which culminated in a very successful season for the club. PJ Kinsella then presented Penny Woulfe with a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation of her support at all the A team games during the season and indeed Penny was seen at many of the B games as well. After the dinner, speeches and presentations it was time to party on the dance floor where everybody enjoyed themselves immensely, some more than others obviously, and some dance moves I haven’t seen before. Bottom line we had a great season and celebrated it in our own style. So no pressure next season lads.

THANKS –
The club would like to thank Christy Purcell, Chairman Limerick Desmond League for attending on the night, thanks also to John Roche and Colm Dalton who represented the Referees Society (Desmond Branch), thanks to The Devon Inn who provided a fantastic dinner and for their help and assistance on the night ensuring everything went smoothly. Thanks to Dick Fitzgibbon for taking all the photos. Thanks to DJ Donnacha for providing the music which was simply awesome, never have I seen Thunderstruck danced to like it was last Friday night. (I won’t mention any names here) Finally a big thanks to all who attended on the night and helped celebrate in truly great fashion.
