‘Up Limerick’

Well, Athea was almost ‘vacated’ on Sunday last as hurling enthusiasts left early in the morning for the much anticipated game against Cork in the Gaelic Grounds. Green and white flags were to be seen flying from many households, cars etc., and tickets wee like gold-dust! It’s amazing what a ‘sporting game’ can do – it brings out the best in everyone and worries, recession etc. “are all put on the back burner”. What an atmosphere was there – “Electric” to say the least and of course having won the game there was no stopping the thousands of supporters who invaded the pitch. Seventeen years is quite some time to have to wait for this very special moment – but it wa well worth the wait! And now everyone looks forward t the next step and hopefully they will go all the way. It’s especially great for the young children and the upcoming young hurlers who will savour this moment forever – we live in hope! Thankfully the children here in Athea are well catered for with sporting activities – the hall for basketball, Pairc na nGael for football and The Vales for soccer and of course those who have joined the neighbouring hurling clubs – get involved with sport, it’s magnificent and keeps so many out of trouble – creates friendships and keeps children so fit – wiping out the word OBESE.

Sincere congratulations to Denis Hayes of Templeathea who recently was married to Noreen Daly of Reen, Killorglin. The reception was held at the Killarney Oaks Hotel where everyone had a great day. Best wishes to the newly weds.

Jenny Liston (daughter of Kay and John of upper Athea) wil be appearing with her band at St. John’s Theatre in Listowel on Friday night next, July 19th at 8pm. Jenny recently launched her new CD, the songs which she had brilliantly penned herself and which is excellent. Don’t forget to go along and support Jenny, she’s a “Rising Star” no doubt.

Don’t forget the Victory Social on this Friday night at The Devon Inn – organised by Athea Utd  for their successful past season. Tickets are just €25 for a 3 course meal and DJ Donnacadh will provide the music. No doubt it should be a very enjoyable night. Tickets are available from any of the committee but hurry – there aren’t many left!

Well we’re half way into July and thankfully the good weather is still with us – avail of every minute of it with our magnificent beaches just down the road.
