Wednesday June 12:

U10’s:
We played Tarbert in an U10 football challenge in Athea last Wednesday before a large crowd of supporters. Both clubs had 20 players so we divided into two ten a side teams and everyone played two twenty minute games. When we played Tarbert two weeks ago in Tarbert they proved too strong for us but we turned the tables on this occasion. All the players played very well on the night but we have some work to do on our point kicking and our passing. We are playing Glin this Thursday at 7pm in Athea and the Blitz in Newcastle West that was postponed could also be on soon.
Panel: Michael Tierney, Eoin O’Shea, Gavin Ambrose, Andrew O’Riordan, Pierce O’Brien, Paraic Enright, Adam Byrne, T.J. Hunt, Dermot Pierse, Daire O’Shea, Conor Mullane, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Fergal Pierse, Gavin Mulvihill, Amy Ryan, Molly Ahern, Denise Carmody, Sarah Scanlon, Molly Pepper Carr, Shauna Sweeney and Shonagh Mahony.

Thursday June 13:

U12’s:

Our U12’s travelled to Raheenagh to take on Killeedy in their second match of phase two of the league. Once again we had a huge panel of twenty one players all ready for action, but it was Killeedy who dominated the first half, they got three early goals before we responded when a John Sexton free went straight to the back of the Killeedy net. Following a fourth goal for Killeedy, John was on the score sheet again as he rose the white flag. Two points for Killeedy just before half time left us eleven points down and a mountain to climb. In the second half, our boys and girls put in a super performance as we clawed our way back into the game. John Sexton who was on fire scored three great goals, his third one being set up by Jack O’ Connor who did great work in winning the ball and laying on the perfect pass. At this stage, our backs were well on top as Claire Carmody and Ciara O’Shea dealt with everything that came their way. Evan Wallace was having a fine game in goals as did Eoin Sheahan, Jason Dillon and Jack Hunt in the forwards. We were now just two points behind but we suffered a blow when Killeedy goaled again. We did not let our heads down as we fought back again; a great block down by Seamus Leahy was picked up by John Sexton who passed it to David O’ Connor who pointed from long range for the score of the match. John Sexton raised the green flag again for his fifth goal to leave us just a point behind with minutes remaining. As we pushed on for an equaliser the ball broke, we got caught at the back and Killeedy scored a goal with the last kick of the game. Overall after a poor start to the game this team showed what they were made of with a great come back in the second half. Team: Evan Wallace, Danny Brady, Ciara O’Shea, Seamus Leahy, Rhys Keily, Alex McEldowney, Jamie O’Mahony, John Sexton, David O’Connor, Eoin Sheahan, Jason Dillon, Claire Carmody, Aidan Curry, Jack O’Connor, Sarah O’Connor, Laura Dalton, Jack McCarthy, Sean Sheehan, Jack Hunt, Nicola Scanlon & Colin Broderick.

Saturday June 15:

U14:

Athea 3–4 Dromcollogher/Broadford 5–9

Our U14’s played Dromcollogher/Broadford in their third match of the league in Dromcollogher on Saturday last. An evenly contested first half ended 3-03 a piece with Alan Kelly and Micheál Ambrose very impressive in midfield. Our scores in the first half came with Brian Sheahan scoring two goals, John Sexton getting the third and three great points from frees from Alan Kelly. Mid-way through this half Cathal O’ Brien made a great save, with Liam McAuliffe and Andy Ahern a constant threat to their defenders. Playing against the wind in the second half our backs were under a lot of pressure as Dromcollogher/Broadford totally dominated the half, despite this our team did their best and some of the highlights were a great point by Brian Sheahan, a couple of super block downs by Daniel McEldowney and great defending by Micheál Dalton. We lost out on a scoreline of Athea 3–4 to Dromcollogher/Broadford 5–9. Team: Cathal O’ Brien, Marl McAuliffe, Micheál Dalton, Joseph Dalton, Daniel McEldowney, Shane Ambrose, David O’Sullivan, Alan Kelly, Micheál Ambrose, Andy Ahern, Liam McAuliffe, David Sheahan, John Sexton, Brian Sheahan, Jack Gleeson, Jack O’Connor & David O’Connor.

ANNUAL AWARDS NIGHT HUGH SUCCESS
We held our Annual Awards Night last Friday night, June 14th at The Top of the Town, Athea and which is the social highlight of the year. The 2012/13 season from a schoolboy perspective wasn’t as successful as previous seasons with only our U10s doing the business when winning the U10 Division 3 Shield Final with a 3-1 win over Newcastle West B  at Clounreask. Presentations were made to U14 player Sean Ryan and U11 player Eoin O’Shea both of whom have being involved with Limerick Desmond Schoolboys/Girls League squads the past season. The U8s received medals for their efforts during the season for their dedication to training and the friendly games they played while Amy Ryan got a lovely memento being our only girl player playing under tens soccer this season. The tens had a great season in the league and the under ten players made a presentation to Tim O’Riordan and Sean O’Shea for all they did over the season with the team and which helped them win the shield. The parents of the under tens also made a presentation to both Tim and Sean for their work with the tens.
The following are the Athea Utd players of the year for 2013
U/10 Michael Tierney.
U/11Eoin O’Shea.
U/12 Ryan O’Connell
U/14 Timothy Tierney

– THANKS –
The club would like to thank all those who attended on the night, especially the players parents and families who made it another great success. Well done to all our players who played with pride in the jersey throughout the past season.
Thanks to Desmond League Referee Pat King for attending on the night and for doing the presentations on the night.
Thanks also to Tim Somers who provided the disco/music on the night.
Thanks also to Betty, Johnny and staff at The Top of the Town for hosting our awards night and who provided the fantastic food as well as being most helpful throughout.
Congrats to all our award winners on the night but for those who didn’t remember next season is only around the corner and it could well be you this time next year.  Roll on 2014.

Athea Utd had a great season at junior level when winning three trophies, the As coming from behind in the league to win the title after a playoff while the Bs won the Division 3 League & Cup Double. Athea Ladies Football

U12:

Our U12 girls played Shamrock Gaels in their semi-final in Adare on a cold and windy Saturday evening last. The opposition were very strong in all areas of the field and it told as they built up a good first half lead. Towards the end of the first half Rachel Greaney got our first score of the match with a well taken point and Aibhilín Murphy soon followed with a great goal. Shamrock Gaels started the second half well with a goal and a point, but it was all Athea after that, Aibhilín Murphy got her second goal of the game after five minutes of the half. Sarah O’ Connor pulled off two great goal line saves as she cleared her lines. Grace Ryan was in top form as her tight marking gave her opponents no chance. Maura Broderick also had a fine game as she fought hard for every ball. Noelle Curtin scored a point to narrow the gap. But the opposition defence stood strong and we found scores hard to come by. Two more fine points from the boot of Rachel Greaney before the final whistle left the full time score Athea 2-4, Shamrock Gaels 5-4.

Our girls can take heart from their excellent second half performance as they play Adare in Cappagh on Friday evening in the Shield final. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Team: Sarah O’Connor, Nicola Scanlon, Ciara O’Shea, Amy Ryan, Grace Ryan, Laura Dalton, Michelle Curtin, Noelle Curtin, Aibhilín Murphy, Rachel Greaney, Maura Broderick, Tara Histon, Kathleen Broderick, Meadhbh Donovan & Molly Pepper Carr.
