Division 1 League Cup 1st Round (December 2nd)

Askeaton (1) 1
Athea Utd A (2) 3 Ger Collins (3)

The As progressed to the quarter finals of the league cup after coming from behind after an early Askeaton goal to win three one. The homeside opened the scoring with a cracking header but two goals from captain Ger Collins had us ahead by half time. We bossed the second half and when the skipper added a third for his hat trick our progression to the last eight was secured.

Team: Pa Ahern, Ryan Carroll, Padraig Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Jamie Collins, Kevin O’Keeffe, Conor Mullane, Ger Collins, Gerard Ahern, Darren Murphy, John Cotter. Sub Padraig Horgan

Referee Sean Hartnett.

Division 3 (December 2nd)

Athea Utd B (1) 3 Jason Quille, Mike McCarthy, Shane Mulvihill

Knockaderry (0) 0

The Bs made it a double success for our junior sides when overcoming visitors Knockaderry on a three nil score line at The Vales on Sunday afternoon. Despite the score line the game was much closer as it wasn’t until the final ten minutes that we got some much needed breathing space. We took the lead on thirty two minutes when Mike McCarthy crossed superbly for Jason Quille to head us in front and that’s how things were at half time. The second half was as close as the first with Knockaderry having some good possession but our defence were working well apart from two occasions when balls across the box caused us some concern but in general we coped well. With ten minutes left we got breathing space when a quick counter attack saw Mike McCarthy get the ball just inside the visitors half wide on the left and took the ball to the penalty area from where he chipped the ball brilliantly over the advancing keeper. Two minutes later it was three nil with a fine goal when Mark Horgan got the ball on the left before playing a diagonal pass to the inrushing Shane Mulvihill who, without breaking stride fired the ball low past them keeper and into the bottom left corner. Eoghan Nash came very close to a fourth only for the Knockaderry keeper having being alert enough to get to the ball first at the edge of the area. Overall a good result that sees us open up a five point gap but still a long, long way go yet.

Team: Donal Woulfe, Tom Greaney, Jason Quille, Mathew Tierney, Sean McGrath, Shane Mulvihill, Pa Kiely, Mark Horgan, Mike McCarthy, Raymond Brouder, Steven McEnery.

Sub used Eoghan Nash, Timmy Enright, Brian Murphy.

Referee Donie Wallace.

Following the very successful tournament held last Christmas Athea Utd are organizing a 7 a side tournament on the Astro Turf at The Vales on  St Stephen’s Day. First game at 11.30a.m sharp. Funds raised will go towards The Great Ormond St Childrens Hospital/Josh O’Mahony Fund and Athea Utd Schoolboys.

The tournament is open to players with an Athea connection from 17 years upwards and the teams will be a mixture of current players, ex players, over 35s and ladies. Last year we had 80 players taking part between the quarter finals, semi finals and final.

Because people have been slow to get their names in (along with their €10) we have pushed the FINAL date for entries back to next Friday, December 7th. People cannot just show up on the day as we want to keep team numbers set to make for better games. So let anyone who might be interested know BEFORE Friday, December 7th

All interested should give their names and €10 entry fee to Kevin O’Keeffe, Tim O’Riordan, Pa Walsh or John Hunt by this Friday night when the teams will be picked.

NB

No late entries will be accepted.

Trophies for the winners and runners up, player of the tournament, best goal, best save and worst miss are being generously sponsored by The Top of The Town, Athea.
