Athea GAA
Result:
Feale Rangers narrowly lost out in the West U21 A Final last Saturday, losing by one point to Strand [combination of Monagae / Kileedy].
After a good first half display and taking a six point lead into the break, signs were good that a win was on the cards. The half time score read 1-5 to 0-2 points. Points were exchanged between the teams in the first 10 mins after the break and we still maintained the lead but it was all Strand for the next fifteen minutes. Strand scored 1-04 without reply to take a one point lead. A few defensive errors allowed Strand convert points in front of the post and we also began to lose the midfield battle.
We levelled matters on the 21st minute but three more points from Strand and a killer goal with 4mins remaining put a six point deficit for us to claw back. Our boys didn’t give up the fight and we pulled a goal back from captain Tom McCarthy, and two pointed frees from James Brouder brought it back to a one point game. We were in injury time at this stage and we tried to win the last kick-out but strand cleared the ball and the game was up. This was disappointing and equally frustrating as Feale Rangers were the better footballing team on the day and should have closed the game out. Final Score 2-09 to 2-10. Naturally the players and management are disappointed but the Athea boys must now focus attention on the West 12 a side Final which will be played this Saturday in Mick Neville Park at 6pm. Let’s hope we have better luck here.
