Joan Molyneaux, The Cross, Ardagh, recently retired as caretaker of Saint Molua’s Hall Ardagh. She had held the role for the past forty three years, and over that time witnessed great changes in the building and the activities that were held there. Mention Ardagh Hall and the name of Joan was sure to feature, as she was the contact and go to person there. Her tea and scones were always looked forward to during the interval or conclusion of an event and they were often the highlight of the evening for many. A person could meet Joan in all kinds of weather at any hour coming or going to the hall, and she spent long hours supervising and keeping order there. She was at the forefront of the renovations, when the building changed over from the Primary School to the community hall, and she has seen the good and bad times there. Joan has been acknowledged as one of the great fundraisers of her time for so many organizations and good causes over the years. The hall was like a second home to Joan who will surely miss the involvement and meeting the people. We thank her for her contribution to the hall and to the many other clubs she served and wish her a happy and healthy retirement. Tom Mullins (junior) from the village has been appointed as her successor and we wish him well in the role.

Congratulations to Ned Kiely, Lisgordan, Ardagh, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday with family members. He is in good health and can be seen out and about and also shopping in Newcastle West.

Death of Maureen Scollard

The death occurred during the past week of Maureen Scollard (nee Sheahan) of Knockfinisk, Athea at Cahermoyle Nursing Home, Ardagh. Deceased had been a resident there for the past number of years but up to recently had remained in reasonably good health for a person of her age. Maureen was a native of Knocknagorna and was a member of a well known and highly respected local family.  She had however lived for most of her life in Knockfinisk since she married late Dan Scollard who predeceased her some years ago. She was a very well liked person in the area and will be greatly missed by her relatives, friends and neighbours . The removal took place on Wednesday evening from Kelly’s funeral Home to St Bartholomew’s Church, Althea and was attended by a large number of people from near and far who called to pay their respects and offer their sympathy to the relatives. There was also a good attendance at the Requiem Mass on Thursday and afterwards at the funeral to Templeathea Cemetery. Maureen is survived by the remaining members of the Sheahan family. By her nieces, nephews, and their families, by her in-laws and other relatives. Sympathy is extended to them all. ‘May her soul rest in peace’.

90th Birthday

Congratulations to my friend Ned Kiely of Lisgordon, Ardagh and formerly of Templeathea who recently celebrated his 90th Birthday with a surprise party of his family members, relations, friends and neighbours at the Shannon House, Foynes. It was a very enjoyable party with the music on the night by Big Maggie. Best wishes to Ned for many more years of good health and happiness with his wife Nora and their lovely family.

 The Abortion Issue

Following the sad and unfortunate death of a woman in Galway University Hospital following a miscarriage, according to her husband she had been refused numerous requests for a medical termination and as this was widely reported in the media it has once again raised the whole contentious debate about the abortion issue in this State as to where legislation stands as to the question of where termination of pregnancy under extraordinary circumstances might be allowed or even become legal in this country.  Under present legislation this has not been clearly defined so the whole controversy arises again and again.  By all accounts Labour’s Minister of State and Dáil Deputy for Limerick City is calling for a Dáil vote on the issue but this as proposed by Jan O’Sullivan is most unlikely as there are many backbenchers in the Dáil that would be very reluctant to take it on themselves to decide such an extremely divisive issue.  This whole matter has of course been vigorously debated time and again with forceful arguments being put forward by both the pro-life and pro-choice sides but it certainly looks as if it will be impossible to find a compromise as the stance taken by both sides seems to be too deeply ingrained for a solution to be found.  The only logical answer on the matter is a referendum in which a simple question will be put to the people of the country asking them whether they are pro-life or pro-choice. Whichever way the vote goes will then naturally have to be acceptable for many years to come until the time and circumstances change so much in the future that it would call maybe for a further referendum.  In the meantime all the citizens of the state would have had the say in the matter and would be free to vote according to their beliefs.  In the meantime it is completely inappropriate for even a Minister of State such as Jan O’Sullivan calling for a slipshod and impossible solution to the problem such as a Dáil vote. In the meantime for what it is worth my own vote if it comes to a referendum would very definitely be pro-life without my apology.

Death of Bridie Quille

It was while being half way through in compiling this column over the weekend that the sad news came through of the unexpected death of Bridie Quille (nee Long) of O’Malley Park, Limerick City and formerly of Lyreacrompane.  My initial reaction on hearing about the death of such a special and dear friend was one of shock and disbelief because Bridie and her husband Joe, also from Lyreacrompane, were lifelong friends of mine since our early days in Lyre and many years before we all came eventually to settle in Limerick, Joe and Bridie in the City and myself in Athea.  We had attended different National Schools. Joe and Bridie went to Lyre and our family to Reenagown, even though we lived in Lyre Parish Renagown was nearer to us. But through attending Mass in Lyre and meeting them now and then in the local shops and Post Office we soon got to know the Quille and Long families. Joe’s older brother Christy served Mass with me in the old Church in Lyre, while we also got to know Joe’s other brothers Timmy and John from playing football with them, and through this we also got to know Bridie’s brother Jerry Long. Bridie’s sister Maimie, who was married to Joe’s brother Christy, sadly died at a young age several years ago when the family were still young.  Through our involvement in organising local GAA football competitions and our interest in the organisation Joe and myself became close friends and this has lasted all through our lives. On the day of our own wedding Joe was MC at the meal and the festivities but we were away in England when Joe and Bridie were married a few years later.  Bridie’s father, late Jerry Long, was a native of Turraree and this means that the Long family of Lyre have many near relations in Glin and Athea areas, the Longs in Turrarree and Clounleharde, Gerry Griffin, Glenagragra, Mary Collins, Athea and her family, John Long and his family, Glenagore as well as other local relatives. Late Jimmy Long of Turraree was an uncle of Bridie Quille and Hannah Mae Collins and the family are near relatives of Bridie from her mother’s side of the family.

During my years working in Limerick City in the 1970’s the Quille household in O’Malley Park was for me always a home away from home where Joe, Bridie and their lovely son Tommy made me, Mary and other members of our family welcome whenever we visited and made us feel like some of their own. When Tommy was a small boy we often looked after him when Bridie and Joe would go out for a night. Mary, God rest her, and members of our family always loved to visit the Quille family as well. In more recent years Joe, Bridie and Tommy together with late Sean Murphy and Doris Shire visited us on several occasions in Knocknagorna and we too always enjoyed their company whenever they called.

Joe Quille is of course widely known as a Press correspondent and a writer as well as being a barman for most of his working life both in Tralee and Limerick City, but perhaps he was known best of all as a programme presenter in various radio stations throughout Limerick and beyond. But as the saying goes behind every great man there is nearly always a great woman. While Bridie Quille was all that, she was much more, she was a devoted wife to Joe, she was a loving mother to Tommy, a loyal sister to Jerry and late Mamie. She was a much loved aunt and a good kind relation of all her in-laws and her other relatives, a very loyal friend to all who knew her as such in both the past and in more recent years. We remember Bridie as a lovely young lively girl attending dances around the locality or taking part in the Lyre Drama Group in her earlier days.  But we will also remember her in more recent years for the fine articles and stories that she contributed to the Athea, Ballyguiltenane and Lyreacrompane Journals.  As well as all this Bridie was also a great homemaker, a wonderful cook and a kind and generous person who was always so well liked by her friends and neighbours both in Limerick and Kerry.

The last big gathering that we attended with the Quille’s was on the occasion of Tommy’s 40th Birthday a few years ago. My deepest sympathy and that of our own family goes to Joe and Tommy and to all her relatives in Limerick, Kerry and beyond as well as those who are living abroad.

May God reward Bridie for her kindness, her generosity and hospitality and console the loved ones that she has left behind. ‘Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis’.
