Athea GAA
County Champions
Feale Rangers (Athea and Mountcollins) are County Minor A champions for the first time after a hard earned win over Kildimo-Pallaskenry. This game was played in Foynes last Saturday evening. We started brightly and raced into a four point lead thanks to scores from Shane Mulvihill, Denis Greaney, Maurice Hayes and Ryan Carroll. The opposition rallied at this stage and levelled the game mid way through the first half. Then came the games decisive score, a brilliant move started with Thomas Sexton in the full back line, the ball ended up with Jamie Sheehan and he finished expertly. We dominated the remainder of the half and led 1 09 to 0 04 at the break thanks to points from Kevin Murphy, Mulvihill and a Stephen Cahill free. Kildimo played much better in the second half and reduced the lead but thanks to excellent defending by Sexton, Jamie Linehan and Dylan Griffin at the back, they failed to get in for a goal. Behind them Jonathan Fitzgerald made two important saves at vital stages. Our half back line of Gary Vaughan, Greaney and Kevin O’Mahony defended well and set up numerous attacks. Mark O’Connor despite carrying a hand injury was introduced in the second half and he made a significant impact. At midfield Stephen Cahill and Matthew Broudair dominated. Up front the movement of and skill of Murphy, Cian O’Sullivan , Sheehan, Mulvihill, Hayes and Carroll was too much for the opposition. This was an excellent performance, at times we played with great skill and in the second half we showed great heart and determination as we dug in for victory. The final score was Feale Rangers 1 13 Kildimo – Pallaskenry 0 09. Team and scorers: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Dylan Griffin, Jamie Linehan, Thomas Sexton, Gary Vaughan, Denis Greaney (0 01) capt, Kevin O’Mahony, Stephen Cahill ( 0 03), Matthew Broudair, Kevin Murphy ( 0 02), Shane Mulvihill(0 03), Ryan Carroll (0 01), Cian O’Sullivan, Maurice Hayes (0 03), Jamie Sheehan ( 1 01), Jamie O’Brien, Mark O’Connor, Michael Mullane, Dan Mullane, Jason Daly Flaherty, Eoin Horgan, Conor Moroney, William Mullane, Padraig Walsh, Sonny Sheehan. U13s:
Our U13s played two matches recently, the first was away to Dromcollogher/Broadford where after a powerful display Athea ran out easy winners at the final whistle with Sean Ryan, Liam McAuliffe and Brian Sheahan among the scorers. The second match was at home to a very strong Glin side who had built up a huge lead by half time. In the second half we were much improved keeping the opposition scoreless but it wasn’t enough as our scoring touch left us down and Glin emerged victors on the night.
