We completed week five of our last man standing competition at the weekend. Again we had a number of fallers with 18 now out of the running, 12 went on Saturday with the bulk been let down by the Gunners while 5 on Everton and 1 on Newcastle went on Sunday.

As it stands we have just over 90 still in with a chance of winning the prize money. We are now down to the nitty gritty with as now its straight knockout on a week to week basis.

Athea Utd would like to extend its deepest sympathies to the family of the late Michael Reidy, Glenagower, Athea who passed away at the weekend. May The Light Of Heaven Be His.

U10 Parish league winners Team Limerick. Captain Luke Gleeson, Eoin O’ Shea, Sarah O’ Connor, Jack Hunt, Adam Byrne, Daire O’ Shea & Evan Wallace

U10 Parish League:

All roads led to Páirc na nGael as four teams battled it out for the title of U10 Parish league winners. Anticipation was high and the excitement was building from early in the week as Limerick, Kerry, Mayo and Donegal prepared to do battle on a beautiful Saturday evening for football. All 26 players that took part played out of their skin on the day. The high fielding, the soloing, the score taking and the tenacity of the tackling would have to be seen to be believed, such was the level of skill on display.

After the first round of matches in which Limerick played Kerry and Mayo played Donegal it was all square as amazingly both matches ended in a draw. Limerick 3-6(11), Kerry 3-2(11) and Mayo 2-4(10) Donegal 2-4(10).

In the second round, a strong second half performance saw Limerick beat a spirited Mayo team 3-6(15) to 1-2(5). In the other match Donegal just edged out Kerry with a late goal 4-0(12) to 2-4(10). So it was all to play for going into the final round. Limerick had a great win over Donegal 2-8(14) to 1-0(3) which saw them into the final. And Kerry edged out Mayo 2-2(8) to 0-0 to leave them level on points with Donegal but in a count back of scores it was Kerry who advanced to the final on points difference.

A large crowd now surrounded the pitch in anticipation of a great final between these two young teams and they were not to be disappointed as Limerick, Captained by Luke Gleeson, and Kerry, Captained by Eoin Sheahan, put their hearts and souls into the game. Parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters were on their toes and cheering loudly when ever a point or goal was scored. Both managers were pacing up and down the side line as it was end to end stuff from start to finish. When Tim Somers blew the final whistle it was Limerick who had emerged victorious on a score line of Limerick 2-2(8) to Kerry’s 0-4(4).

As we looked back over the tournament, outstanding performances for each and everyone of the boys and girls was a joy to behold. It was a delight to see the determination from players Amy Ryan, Laura Dalton, Michael Tierney, Brandon Finucane, Pierce O’Brien, Sarah Scanlon & Meadhbh Donovan come to the fore. Outstanding marking by Paraic Enright, Jack Hunt, Luke Gleeson, Gavin Ambrose, Nicola Scanlon, Aidan Curry, Danny Brady, Adam Byrne & Rhys Kiely was a force to be reckoned with. There was scores a plenty the pick of which were a 45 from Sarah O’ Connor, fantastic goals from Daire O’Shea, Eoin Sheahan & Alex McEldowney. Long distance points from Eoin O’Shea, Andrew O’Riordan and some brilliant saves from goalies Evan Wallace, Thomas McEnery, TJ Hunt & Colin Broderick.

Limerick Captain Luke Gleeson was presented with the shield by Chairman Paul Curry and Kerry Captain Eoin Sheahan was presented with the runners up trophy. All the boys and girls received medals and treats for their valiant efforts to cap off a fantastic feast of football and entertainment for the huge crowd that attended. All the parents received light refreshments afterwards in the Clubhouse. A big thank you to our referees Derek Byrne and Tim Somers who did a brilliant job. We would like to thank all those who brought treats on the day and to everyone that helped out. It is great to see the Club spirit growing with each year that goes by. Teams on the day were:
