Athea G.A.A.

Denis
Greaney Captain of Athea
receiving the West Final Plaque from the West Board Chairman Pat O’ Donnell

Result:

The Athea minors collected their second U18 title of the season when they defeated St Senan’s in Askeaton last Thursday evening. We had to line out without county minor star Mark O’Connor who remains on the injured list, but hopefully will be recovered for the county semi-final. We took an early lead thanks to two massive long range frees from Ryan Carroll. We dominated in  most areas of the field and up front Maurice Hayes, Jamie Sheehan, Jamie O’Brien and Denis Greaney all kicked points. With five minutes left in the half a quality move started by Dylan Griffin and Gary Vaughan at the back saw Jamie Sheehan gain possession and he brilliantly chipped the keeper from twenty yards. We led 1 07 to 0 01 at the break. St Senan’s came into the game in the second half but points from Sheehan and Hayes saw us remain in charge. Defenders Shane Mulvihill and Thomas Sexton also got their names on the scoreboard with two fantastic points. The highlight of this half were two great goals finished brilliantly by Kevin Murphy and Kevin O’Mahony, the move for both goals was started by two accurate kick-outs from Jonathan Fitzgerald. The final score was Athea 3 12  St Senan’s 2 06. Afterwards captain Denis Greaney received a West Board trophy for the second time this summer.

EMERGING  TALENT
Well done to James Ryan and William Sexton who have being selected on the FAI’s Emerging Talent Programme for the coming season. Both players impressed during last season and again at the SFAI Kennedy Cup in UL last June. As a result of their performances in UL they were invited for assessment over a five week period in July and following on from this have being selected for the FAI’s Emerging Talent Programme. Training for them begins next Monday in Celtic Park, Killarney which is one of the twelve FAI centres in the country that train U15 players to play to international standards and are under the guidance U15 International Manager Niall Harrison. We wish both the very best for their season ahead with the FAI’s Emerging Talent Programme.
FAI U19 LEAGUE
Two players from last seasons youths team are currently playing U19 League of Ireland, namely Maurice Hayes and Gavin Dillon. Maurice signed with Wexford Youths and has started both of their games so far against Limerick FC and Galway Utd. Indeed he scored one of his sides goals in their opening day defeat away to Limerick FC while setting up three in Wexford’s 6-2 win over Galway. Gavin signed with Limerick FC earlier in the summer and came on as a sub in Limerick FC’s opening day win at home to Wexford Youths and was in their squad for the game away to Athlone Town last night (11th Sept).
