Athea Coiste na nÓg

Matches: U12’s

Our U12’s travelled to Ballingarry on Monday evening last to take on Granagh/Ballingarry in the league. Playing against a much stronger team our boys did very well throughout the whole game. In the first half, we found scores hard to come by and our backs were under pressure but they coped very well and were backed up by some brilliant saves by David O’ Sullivan in goals. The second half, we were much improved with all the players giving 100% for Athea. Micheál Dalton was first to score when he burst through the defence to score a fantastic goal. David Sheahan converted a penalty when Jack O’ Connor was fouled inside the box after catching a high ball in from Shane Ambrose. Shane himself was next to score when he pointed from long range and our last score was a great goal when Jack O’ Connor once again caught a high ball in and this time he slotted it past the keeper to leave the final score Athea 3-01 Granagh/Ballingarry 4-02. This was a very exciting match and even though we lost, Athea played very well for the whole game. Team: David O’Sullivan, Joseph Dalton, Micheál Dalton, Jamie O’Mahony, Shane Ambrose, John Sexton, Daniel McEldowney, Jason Dillon, Jack O’Connor, Donnacha Clancy, David Sheahan, David O’Connor & Sean Sheahan.

Result:

County League

Athea 1 05 Castlemahon 1-07

We lost our final game of the league last Saturday evening in difficult playing conditions. We led 1 02 to 0 04 at the break the goal was a super effort from Jamie Collins following a move involving a number of players. Athea dominated the early stages of the second half but continued to waste possession and this proved costly as Castlemahon got a soft goal midway through the half and this proved to be the score that separated the sides at the finish. Ger Collins was outstanding at wing back and later at midfield. Others to impress were Podge Reidy, Tom Collins, Mark O’Connor and Jamie Collins. Team: T Enright, P Reidy, T Collins, M Tierney, G Collins, M Reidy, M Chawke, P Ahern, C Mullane, S McGrath, J Cotter, K O’Keeffe, J Collins, B McKenna, S Ahern. Subs: R Broudair, M Ahern, M O’Connor, J Geoghegan, J Quille , K O’Mahony.

Next Saturday we play Rathkeale in the County Championship. A huge improvement will be required if we are to get the vital two points on offer.

Minors:

The minors ( Athea and Mountcollins) have qualified for the West A final where they will play Daithí Broudairs. In the 12 a side competition a win against St Kieran.s next Thursday should see us qualify for the final of that competition.

Junior B:

West Championship Athea 0 08 Knockaderry 0 05. The B’s have qualified for the West quarter final following a good win against Knockaderry in Askeaton last Monday evening. A lot of credit must go to the management team of John Hunt and Eddie Barrett who this year have revived the Novice team after a few disappointing seasons.

Fixtures:

West Minor 12 aside

St Kieran’s v Athea in Coolcappagh, Thursday August 9 at 7. 30.

County Intermediate Championship

Athea v St Mary’s/ Sean Finns, Saturday August 11 in NCW at 7. 30.

Sympathy:

The club would like to offer its sincere condolences to the O’Connor family on the recent passing of Mike.
