MAURICE HAYES SIGNS FOR WEXFORD YOUTHS

Maurice Hayes, one of our clubs top players at underage level last Saturday put pen to paper with League of Ireland side Wexford Youths. Since making his debut at under tens Maurice has improved with every passing season and is one of the finest midfielders the club has produced. Maurice achieved success at U-10s, U-15s, U-17s and U-19s as well as success with our Senior B’s when they won the league for the first time last season. The club are delighted that Maurice has signed with League of Ireland side Wexford Youths having recently come to the attention of their coaching staff. Having clearly impressed at recent trials as well as playing over seventy minutes of a recent challenge game against Park FC  (Dublin AUL) in which he also scored in a 5-0 win Maurice met with Wexford Youths supremo Mick Wallace before signing for their U-19s.
Wexford Youths will compete in the League of Ireland U-19 Southern Section along with Limerick FC, Longford Town, Galway Utd, Mervue Utd and Athlone Town. The first game for Maurice will see Wexford Utd play away to Limerick FC on September 2nd
So congrats again Maurice and the very best of luck in the season ahead with Wexford Youths from all here at Athea Utd AFC

West Champions

The Athea/Mountcollins combination are west minor champions again after a spirited win over Daithi Broudairs (Drom/Broadford and Feenagh Kilmeedy). This final was played in Foynes last Sunday evening. We started slowly but a strong finish to the first half saw us lead by one point at the break.

The second half proved to be a very tight affair and the sides were level with five minutes to go, a late scoring burst  saw us seal the West A title for the second year in a row. Jonathan Fitzgerald kept another clean sheet in goal and made a vital save at a crucial stage in the second half. The full back line of Dylan Griffin, Jamie Linehan and Thomas Sexton were excellent especially in the second half. Garry Vaughan attacked and defended with style in the half-back line, alongside him captain Denis Greaney gave a man of the match display in the centre. On the other wing Shane Mulvihill did an excellent marking job on the opposition’s danger man.

The Mountcollins duo of Stephen Cahill and Matthew Broudair (1 01) gave us a good platform in midfield. In the half forward line Kevin Murphy (0 03) used his speed and skill to torment the opposition throughout the game. Kevin Mahony and Ryan Carroll won a huge amount of ball and were involved in a number of scores. The full forward line of Jamie O’Brien (0 02), Maurice Hayes ( 0 03) and Jamie Sheehan (0 01) were excellent targets and kicked the points that won us the game. We won 1 10 to 0 08.

The subs included Jason Daly-Flaherty, Dan and William Mullane, Eoin Horgan , Pauric Walsh, Sonny Sheehan.

All are under age next year and will play a vital part in the upcoming 12 a side semi final. We were without county minor Mark O’Connor, hopefully he will be back for the county semi-final.

St. Senan’s responded quickly with a goal of their own before Shane Dalton kicked two great points to leave us just two points behind at the break. In the second half Athea were much improved and a point from John Sexton left just one point between the teams. Athea then rattled St. Senan’s when Shane Ambrose scored a long range goal, this was quickly followed by a second goal by John Sexton. St. Senan’s came back into it scoring a couple of points, two further points from John Sexton insured Athea’s victory at the final whistle on a scoreline of 3-5 to 1-8. Team: Cathal O’Brien, David O’Connor, Michéal Dalton, Jamie O’Mahony, David O’ Sullivan, John Sexton, Shane Dalton, Shane Ambrose, Jack O’ Connor, David Sheahan, Jason Dillon, Sean Sheehan & Donnacha Clancy.
