Matches:

U14’s:

Athea 1 -7 (10)  Duagh 1- 2 (5)

We took on our Kerry neighbours Duagh in a challenge match in their home ground. A tough match was in store for the lads against a Duagh side boasting three Feale Rangers players. From the throw in, Athea showed their commitment with Micheál Ambrose jumping highest to knock the ball on to his fellow midfielder Sean Ryan who through some neat interplay with Alan Kelly scored the first point of the game. This set the president for the first half where Athea dominated possession. Our wing forwards made it very difficult for the Duagh defence to maintain possession with JJ Sheehy running the length of the pitch on several occasions to dispossess his marker.  Shane Dalton one of our youngest players was a constant threat and scored a classy point midway into the half. Not to be out done, Brian Sheahan at corner forward making clever runs off the ball got on the end of a long ball from Cillian Liston to strike the ball to the back of the net just before halftime. At the other end of the pitch our defence was solid, with the ever impressive TJ Doherty who kept his man scoreless and never let him out of his sight. Duagh’s forwards were very lively and were constantly looking for the ball but today they came up against a defence equally as eager. The two McAuliffes, Mark and Liam had exceptional games at left and right corner back not only did they keep their own marker out of the game but also put pressure on advancing opposition players. Conor Fitzgerald was solid at full back bursting out with the ball and delivering accurate passes to his half back line. James Ryan at centre back made life very difficult for his marker, constantly advancing forward and was rewarded with 2 points. Duagh had their chances too but with some Shay Given like reflexes Timothy Tierney kept them out. Overall a fantastic display of football from the lads ensuring the bragging rights for Limerick over their Kingdom rivals!! Team: Timothy Tierney, Liam McAuliffe, Conor Fitzgerald, Mark McAuliffe , TJ Doherty, James Ryan, Cillian Liston, Micheál Ambrose, Sean Ryan, JJ Sheehy, Alan Kelly, Shane Dalton, Donnacha McEnery, Ronan Hayes, Brian Sheahan, Subs: Jack Gleeson, William Sexton & William  McEnery.

U10s:

The under 10s were very busy last week with games against Glin on Tuesday night and games against St. Kieran’s and Castlemahon on Saturday night in The Annual Old Mill Tournament. We had 16 players for the Glin games so we divided in to two teams of eight and played Glin A and B, after two ten minute halves we swapped over and played another two ten minute halves against the other Glin team. The large crowd enjoyed the games in what was a lucky dry hour. Thanks to Glin for travelling up, we will return the compliment shortly. Panel: Pauric Enright, Laura Dalton, Evan Wallace, Brandon Finucane, Eoin O’Shea, Michael Tierney, Pierce O’Brien, Nicola Scanlon, T.J. Hunt, Sarah O’Connor, Gavin Ambrose, Luke Gleeson, Eoin Sheahan, Danny Brady, Alex McEldowney and Amy Ryan.

We travelled to the Old Mill on Saturday for their tournament which was our under 10s first 15 a side game, we weren’t so lucky with the weather as we got several downpours before, during and after the games. Our first game was against the powerful St. Kieran’s who were on top in the first half, and built up a lead. We outplayed them in the second half but found scores hard to come by. Having lost that game we were straight into the Shield final against Castlemahon and what a game that turned out to be. In the first half Athea played some of the best football they have ever played especially our defence. Gavin Ambrose was outstanding at full back, the half back line of Josh Mulally, Danny Brady and Evan Wallace was our strongest line, clearing every ball. At midfield the outstanding Michael Tierney and Luke Gleeson were everywhere and up front Eoin O’Shea was a constant threat. It was some heroic defending from Castlemahon that stopped us from building up an unassailable lead in that half, when playing with the slight breeze. In the second half the massive crowd could be heard in Newcastle West as they cheered on their teams but it was Castlemahon that got the scores to win the game. The other players who all played their hearts out, were Jack Hunt who made an unbelievable goal line save in that second half, Daire O’Shea, T.J. Hunt, Nicola Scanlon, Laura Dalton, Sarah O’Connor, Aidan Curry, Pierce O’Brien and Meadhbh Donovan. After the game the players, who were drowned to the skin, were presented with medals by the Old Mill Sports club, which they were delighted with.

Coaching continues on Friday at 6.30p.m. and don’t forget to register this week for the Cúl Camp which starts Monday 9th July, it is a great chance to practice your football for a full week with top coaches from around the county.

The county athletics finals took place in Mungret over the weekend of 23rd June and Athea were well represented participating in many events.   The weekend’s events commenced on Thursday where Jack Hunt performed admirably in the long puck event.  Also on Thursday Cathal O’Brien participated in the 2km Cycling on Grass event and had a good performance despite being in recovery from a recent broken leg.

On Saturday the track events got underway and while Athea had a small number of participants everyone gave a good performance.  Nicole Ahern, Sarah O’Connor and Molly Ahern took part in the U-10 200m and all ran very well.  Eoin Sheahan ran in the 100m U-10 event and successfully qualified from his heat.   Under 12’s were represented by Sinead Hunt in the 100m and Sinead also qualified in her heat.

On Sunday morning Margaret Stackpoole competed in the Javelin U-16 event and did extremely well coming in third position and winning a bronze medal for Athea.  Also on Sunday Rebecca Collins ran in the girls U-7 sprint and performed superbly.  Eoin Sheahan competed in his 100m heat in the U-10’s event and ran an extremely good race.  Sinead Hunt won her heat in the 100m and went on to compete in the 100m final.   Sinead ran a fantastic race coming in second and winning silver for Athea. Result:

County Intermediate Championship

Athea 2 12 Bruree 1 01

We recorded an easy win over a disjointed Bruree side in Rathkeale last Saturday evening. We dominated from the start but failed to convert a number of chances. A John Cotter goal saw us lead 1 07 to 1 01 at the break. We kept the opposition scoreless in the second half and added 1 05, the goal coming from Jamie Collins. At the back Tom Collins impressed in the fullback position while Limerick minors Denis Greaney and Mark O’Connor were yet again outstanding. Pa Ahern gave a man of the match display at midfield while up front Jamie Collins , John Cotter and Tom Greaney posed the biggest problems for the Bruree rearguard. Our next game is against Sean Finns and the result will have a huge bearing on who gets out of the group. Hopefully we will have Gerard Ahern, Paul Collins and Morgan O’Connor back in action by then. Team V Bruree: Timmy Enright, Podge Reidy, Tom Collins, Matthew Tierney, Mark O’Connor, Mike Reidy, Denis Greaney, Conor Mullane, Pa Ahern, Sean McGrath, John Cotter, Jamie Collins, Kevin O’Keeffe, Brian McKenna, Sean Ahern. Subs: Martin Chawke, Tom Greaney, Ger Collins, Kevin O’Mahony, Joe Vaughan, Brian Ahern, Mike Ahern.
