Junior B West Championship.
Athea 0–8 Drombroadford 1-12
This game was played in Tournafulla on Thursday July 5th, we had a very good turn out of players with 22 togged out for duty. We trailed at half time 0–8 to 0–4, but reduced the deficit to 0-10 to 0–8 with ten minutes remaining. At this stage we were right in it but a combination of a goal for Drom and having a man sent off finished our chances. Overall the team played some good football and if we had Ray Brouder who was unavailable through illness we could easily have won. Best on the night were Jonathan Fitzgerald, Gary Carroll, Brian Ahern, Neilus Hunt, John Geoghegan and Paul Matthews. We are due to play Cappagh next, but rumour has it they have withdrawn, if so our next game is against Knockaderry. Team: Donal Woulfe, Mike Ahern, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Shane Tierney, Thomas Sexton, Brian Ahern, Gary Carroll, Neilus Hunt, Colm Hassett, Jamie O’ Brien, Tom Hassett, John Geoghegan, Patrick Kiely, Denis Collins, Paul Matthews, subs, Tony Missorici, Dan McMahon, Liam O’ Brien, Eoghan McCarthy, Brian Murphy, Paul Griffin & Mike Hayes.
Athea Golf Society
Our next outing is to Limerick Golf Club on Saturday July 21st. A meeting to make arrangements will be held at the Top of the Town on Tuesday 17th at 9pm. Tee times start at 11.15.
As this is a team event it is important that all intending to travel have their names in before the meeting so that a draw for partners can bAe made.
We look forward to playing this course for the first time.
Maura O’Connor Dalton
Maura O’Connor Dalton has been a huge loss to Athea and will continue to be missed for years to come by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. 45 years old is far too short a life for someone who had so much to offer and her two children, husband, mother, brothers and sisters will be all too aware of the injustice of it all. This piece is just a short reminder to those who had forgotten about just how good she was at sport back in the eighties. Athea Youth Club was very strong at the time and there was an All-Ireland Youth Club soccer competition which the local club entered. Even though they were unsuccessful the first time it made them even more determined the next year. Maura was an integral part of that team and also won numerous titles with the Tarbert School in basketball & table tennis. The competitive streak in her meant that she retained her place on the Athea boys U-14 team until the rules didn’t allow her to play any longer.
The second year they entered the U-16 competition for the Youth Club they decided to train 2 to 3 nights a week, which was unheard of those days. They trained in Tarbert and did the Church Road ring at least twice a week. All their preparation paid off in the end when they were the youngest team ever to bring home an All-Ireland title to Athea.
They repeated the feat later at U-19 level thanks in no small measure to the determination and athleticism of Maura. There were scenes of great jubilation when the girls returned to Athea with the All-Ireland Cup.
Maura was also a talented set dancer and won county titles partnered by Mossie Woulfe. She was also very artistic throughout her life and only recently started her own home-made personalised greeting card business. Maura was a very special person.
