NO JOY IN CUP FINAL

DIVISION 1 LEAGUE CUP FINAL
Athea Utd     (0) 2 Cillian O’Connor (2)
Carrig Cel       (3) 3

Last Thursday night our Junior As played their last game of the season when we faced neighbours Carrig Celtic in the Division 1 League Cup Final in Knockdown. We got off to a poor start when poor defending allowed Carrig in for a very soft goal and by half  time we were three down and it all to do. We were very unlucky when Joe Weirs right footed free kick from the left edge of the area was just inches past the far post. Apart from this chance it was in truth probably our worst forty five minutes of soccer we had played all season and in the second half we upped the tempo and had Carrig on the back foot in the third quarter. We were very lucky to pull a goal back early in the second half when the keeper made a brilliant foot save to deny Darren Murphy. We continued to press the opposition and got a deserved goal when Cillian O’Connor found the net from a corner. The game was end to end now with Athea pressing forward and Carrig playing on the break but super defending by Padraig Reidy and Tom Collins kept us in the game though we were lucky when Carrig hit the bar. It should have three two when excellent play by Darren Murphy skinned two defenders on the right only to see a Carrig defender take the ball off the line. In the closing stages we made it three two when Cillian O’Connor drilled the ball low to the bottom right corner but this was too little too late.
