Athea Ladies Football
Athea U12 Girls:
Athea U12 girls travelled the long journey to Pallaskenry on Friday evening last to take on Killulta Gaels in the final game of the league. Playing into the wind in the first half and despite having a lot of early possession we found scores hard to come by as we wasted a lot of chances with some wayward shooting. Killulta Gaels came more into the game as the half went on but Michelle Curtin in goals made two fantastic saves to keep the home team scoreless. Our half backs of Emer Lenihan and Nicole Fitzgerald stepped up to the mark and were quick to break down any attacks on the Athea goal. The breakthrough came when Aibhilín Murphy latched on to a long ball a scored a brilliant point. Our forwards were busy as Ciana Murphy, Rachel Greaney and Niamh McDonagh helped by Noelle Curtin in midfield were attacking at every opportunity. Just before half time Aibhilín scored two great goals to leave us 7 points up at the break. With the wind at our backs in the second half, we started playing much better football, Michelle Curtin who was now at mid-field was first to score in the second half with a point. Her sister Aoife added a further point shortly afterwards. Claire Carmody who was outstanding at mid-field covering all areas of the pitch scored a fantastic long range point. Aibhilín popped up once again to score her third goal of the game. Our back line of Sarah O’ Connor, Grace Ryan and Sinead Hunt dealt with everything that came their way. Maura Broderick who was introduced at half time was also busy in the forwards. The very impressive Aoife Curtin scored another point and she finished the scoring when she found the back of the net twice before the final whistle. Over all this was a great team performance and great credit is due to all the girls for the huge effort they put in on the night and we are now looking forward to our semi-final on Friday evening. Team: Michelle Curtin, Sarah O’ Connor, Grace Ryan, Sinead Hunt, Nicole Fitzgerald, Emer Lenihan, Claire Carmody, Noelle Curtin, Ciana Murphy, Aoife Curtin, Rachel Greaney, Niamh McDonagh, Aibhilín Murphy & Maura Broderick.
