B’s GO TOP OF TABLE

Division 4 League

Athea Utd B (0) 4      Ian Murphy (2), Steven McEnery (2)

St Itas B   (0) 0

Our Bs are the new league leaders in division four after their four nil win at home to St Itas last Sunday afternoon. For the second home league game in a row it took a second half goal flurry for us to seal the three league points on offer and we now lead by two points from Kilcornan and Shannonside. We dominated for most of the first half as we created a host of chances but were equally guilty of some very bad misses. After the break we continued to dominate and eventually made the breakthrough when Steven McEnery beat the keeper to a through ball. Youths top scorer Ian Murphy then should have extended our lead when the ball fell kindly to him after the keeper had made a great save but the striker shot tamely into the keepers hands. However he redeemed himself soon after with a tidy finish to double our lead and it got better two minutes later when he got his second of the game after a brilliant move down the right involving Kevin Murphy and Maurice Hayes. McEnery then rounded off the scoring in the eighty first minute. Team: Donal Woulfe, John Geoghegan, Jason Quille, Pa Kiely, Tom Greaney, Eoghan Nash, Mike Twomey, Maurice Hayes, Raymond Brouder, Ian Murphy, Steven McEnery. Subs: Kevin Murphy, Mathew Tierney, Gary Carroll. Referee: John Roche.

Division 1 League

Old Mill     (0) 0 Athea Utd A  (0) 1       Gerard Ahern

After going down by a single goal away to Glantine in our last league game we got back on track last Sunday with a workmanlike but nevertheless deserved one nil win away to Old Mill. Conditions were testing but we took the game to the homeside and had a good chance when John Cotter forced the keeper into a very fine save. We went closer soon after when Maurice Hayes got through only for the keeper to get a touch on the ball before a defender cleared the ball off the line. Old Mill didnt threaten much as our defence were in top form with Tom Collins and Martin Chawke in the centre giving little away while keeper Pa Ahern hadn’t much to do except to tip one potentially dangerous cross over the bar. The second half was much the same with Athea doing the pressing with the homeside looking to play on the break. With ten minutes to go we deservedly went ahead when Gerard Ahern got the games only goal when he drilled a free kick low inside the right hand post. We then held on and now climb to third in the table and everything to play for. Team: Pa Ahern, Ryan Carroll, Padraig Reidy, Martin Chawke, Tom Collins, Maurice Hayes, Mike Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Kevin O’Keeffe, Darren Murphy, John Cotter. Subs: Gerard Ahern, Cillian O’Connor, Conor Mullane. Referee: Liam O’Connor.

U/12 Cup

Athea Utd   (1) 4      Shane Dalton (4) Feenagh     (0) 0

The twelves were in cup action last Saturday morning when we entertained Feenagh at The Vales. This was going to be a tough game for our players as Feenagh were top of division four and hadn’t loss a game yet this season. We started well but Feenagh soon came more into the game began to put us under some pressure but not for the first time this season Michael Dalton at centre half was outstanding. We looked to retake the game to Feenagh and had a lot of possession but often we were trying to walk the ball into the net. Indeed it took a piece of individual brilliance from Shane Dalton to break the deadlock when he went past at least three defenders before curling the ball low inside the right hand post. From then until half time it was nip and tuck and we were relieved to be ahead at the break.

The second half in general followed the same pattern as the first and it was midway through the second half before we got some breathing space when a well struck shot by Shane Dalton took a deflection off a defender and flew past the keeper. This broke the spirit of the opposition and we added two more late on with Shane getting both and bring his total to four. In the second round we will have home advantage again, this time against Newcastle West B who are currently leading division five and like Feenagh are still unbeaten in their league. Team: Cathal O’Brien, David O’Connor, Shane Ambrose, Michael Dalton, David O’Sullivan, Micah O’Connell, Joseph Dalton, Seamus Leahy, Ryan O’Connell, John Sexton, Shane Dalton. Subs: Jason Dillon, Andy Ahern, Jack O’Connor, Daniel McEldowney Referee: Donie Wallace.

 U/16 Division 2

Athea Utd        (1) 2      Brian O’Connor (pen), Pa O’Connor  Abbeyfeale Utd B   (2) 3

The sixteens were very unlucky not to have picked up a point in this game last Saturday as they should have had a penalty late on that would have probably gotten us a share of the spoils. The visitors went into a two nil lead but Brian O’Connor from the penalty spot had us right back in it at half time. Into the second half and we were level when Pa O’Connor finished in style only for Abbeyfeale to go back in front ten minutes later. Team: James Ryan, Joey Kelly, William Sexton Padraic Walsh, Sean Ryan, Brian O’Connor, Peter O’Connor, Ronan Hayes, Philip Daly, Pa O’Connor, JJ Sheehy. Subs: Jack Denihan, Jason Dalton, Tony McAuliffe. Referee: Colm Dalton.
