FAI Youths Cup

Abbeyfeale Utd   (0) 0

Athea Utd            (0) 1     Maurice Hayes (pen) 28 mins

Our youths advanced to the fourth round of the FAI Youths Cup with a deserved win away to Abbeyfeale Utd last Saturday afternoon. There was only one goal in this game and that came on twenty eight minutes when Maurice Hayes confidently converted from the penalty spot after winger Liam O’Connor was taken down inside the penalty area. By the time we opened the scoring we could have being further ahead as Michael Woods was very unlucky not to see his fine effort come back off the post while the same player also hit the crossbar just before half time with the ball bouncing down on the line but the referee deemed that the ball wasn’t over the line. Athea continued to play the better football with Shane Mulvihill, Mark O’Connor and Maurice Hayes controlling midfield while the back four of Gary Vaughan, Aaron O’Connor, Jamie Sheehan and Rici Hanley were giving little away while anything that came his way keeper Daniel Daly dealt with it assuredly. Up front Michael Woods, Dylan Griffin and Ian Murphy until the latter got injured kept the home defence busy.

The second half saw Abbeyfeale attack more but all the Athea players really got stuck in and defended very well with Jamie and Shane now coming into their own while Daniel made two good saves. It was a case of putting bodies on the line and all the Athea players did so. With about ten minutes left we went very close to make it two nil when a great break by Liam O’Connor took him clear of the Abbeyfeale defence before picking out Sonny Sheahan who was very unlucky to see his effort come back off the woodwork. The homeside then had a player sent off as Athea finished the game strongly to deservedly advance to round four.
