SUPER YOUTHS OUST KILLARNEY
FAI Youths Cup 2nd Round
Athea Utd (2) 4 Ian Murphy (2), Dylan Griffin, Michael Woods
Killarney Cel (1) 2
A superb performance last Saturday afternoon from our youths team saw them defeat a highly fancied Killarney Celtic at The Vales to move into the third round of the FAI Youths Cup. Just a few weeks previous the same two clubs met in the FAI 17s Cup where the Kerry side had a very flattering four one win but we turned the tables this time and were full value for our win. We started well and deservedly went ahead with a goal from top scorer Ian Murphy and not long after Dylan Griffin extended our advantage. We had strong shouts for a penalty when Griffin was taken down in the box and ironically it was a penalty that allowed Killarney back into it to leave us two one up at the break. We didn’t rest on our laurels and continued to push Celtic back and we restored our two goal cushion when a cross from Ryan Carroll was controlled by Murphy and from eight yards there was no mistake. The icing on the cake was provided by Michael Woods with a super glancing header from an equally super first time cross by Gary Vaughan.
Team: Shane Mulvihill, Ryan Carroll, Jamie Sheehan, Mark O’Connor, Aaron O’Connor, Maurice Hayes, Liam O’Connor, Rici Hanley, Kevin Murphy, Dylan Griffin, Ian Murphy. Subs: Gary Vaughan, Michael Woods, Dan Mullane.
Referee: Pat O’Donnell.
Division 4 League
Athea Utd B (1) 5 Steven McEnery (4), Michael Reidy
Shannonside B (0) 1
The Bs got back to winning ways on Sunday morning last with an emphatic win over second placed Shannonside B and as a consequence we leap frog them and are now just a point behind leaders Kilcornan B. The only goal of the first half came from a Steven McEnery penalty after Maurice Hayes was taken down in the box. In general that opening half was scrappy with us just about shading matters as was the case for the first fifteen minutes of the second half. A quick fire double by McEnery to complete his hat trick put us firmly in the driving seat and it was nearly four only for a super effort from distance by Pa Kiely just go inches wide. Shannonside then got one back but McEnery then got his fourth of the day to restore our three goal cushion before Michael Reidy completed the scoring when his cross from the right was fumbled by the keeper and ended in the net.
Team: Donal Woulfe, Kevin Murphy, Tom Greaney, Morgan O’Connor, Jason Quille, Pa Kiely, Michael Reidy, Maurice Hayes, Eoghan Nash, Raymond Brouder, Steven McEnery. Subs: Gary Carroll, Patrick Horgan, John Geoghegan.
Referee: Pat O’Donnell.
U/12 Division 2
Kildimo Utd (0) 0
Athea Utd (3) 8 Shane Dalton (3), Joseph Dalton (2), Ryan O’Connell, Jack O’Connor, Andy Ahern
The twelves were away to Kildimo on Saturday last and won their third game of the league with a very easy win. Ryan O’Connell put us ahead after two minutes and we never looked back after that with Shane Dalton adding two more to leave us three up at half time. In the second half Shane got his hat trick, Joseph Dalton added two more while Jack O’Connor and Andy Ahern also got in on the scoring act. We are now half way through the league and lie in second place with everything to play for.
Team: Cathal O’Brien, David O’Connor, Shane Ambrose, Michael Dalton, David O’Sullivan, John Sexton, Jack O’Connor, Micah O’Connell, Jason Dillon, Shane Dalton, Ryan O’Connell. Subs: Andy Ahern, Daniel McEndowney, Joseph Dalton. Referee: Tom Fitzpatrick.
U/10 Division 2
Shannonside (3) 8
Athea Utd (1) 1 Michael Tierney
The tens were away to Shannonside on Bank Holiday Monday last and put in a great effort but the strength of the homeside prove decisive especially in the second half and on a pitch that was hardly playable. The homeside scored first with Michael Tierney equalizing soon after before two late goals had the homeside three one up at half time. The stronger homeside pulled away in the second half as we found it hard to come to terms with an now unplayable pitch but once again the Athea side battled away to the final whistle and in front of their great supporters.
Team: Evan Wallace Brandon Finucane, Paric Enright, Michael Tierney, Danny Brady, Gavin Ambrose, Eoin O’Shea, Andrew O’Riordan, Luke Gleeson, Jack Hunt, DJ O’Connor, Daire O’Shea, Aidan Curry.
U/16 Division 2
Athea Utd (2) 6 Pa O’Connor (2), Brian O’Connor (2), William Sexton, Peter O’Connor
NCW Rovers (4) 11
A bizarre game this as leaders Newcastle West Rovers visited The Vales and went away with the points after a goal feast we are unlikely to witness again for some time. Goalscorers on the day were Pa O’Connor and Brian O’Connor with two each while William Sexton and Peter O’Connor also got a goal.
Team: Joey Kelly, Sean Ryan, Padraic Walsh, William Sexton, Jack Denihan, Brian O’Connor, Ronan Hayes, Pa O’Connor, James Ryan, Peter O’Connor, Phillip Daly.
Subs: JJ Sheehy, Jason Dalton, Tony McAuliffe.
Referee: Pat King.
Desmond U/17 Cup Q/F
Abbeyfeale Utd (2) 8
Athea Utd (2) 4 Michael Woods (2), Dylan Griffin, Peter O’Connor
Another bizarre game here as our seventeens relinquished the trophy they won last season. In this game we led two nil with goals from Michael Woods and Dylan Griffin but the homeside came back to level by the interval. In the second half a goal blitz by the hosts saw them pull away before we got two late consolations from Woods again and Peter O’Connor.
Team: Dan Mullane, Gary Vaughan, Tomas Sexton, Aaron O’Connor, Thomas Scanlon, Liam O’Connor, Dylan Griffin, Rici Hanley, Michael Woods, Peter O’Connor, Ian Murphy. Sub: Jason O’Flaherty. Referee: Pat King.

Monday 31st of October:
U14’s:
Our U14’s bowed out of this years All County league at the Semi-final stage as they were beaten by Claughaun in Croagh on Sunday evening last. Claughaun were fast off the mark as they took the game to Athea from the off and scored 4 points in quick succession before William Sexton got our first point of the evening. Then a goal for Claughaun seem to spur on our boys. Our backs led by Tommy Quaid and Killian O’ Donoghue tightened up and we started moving the ball very well into our forwards. William Sexton was on fire at this stage as he scored our second and third points before he scored Athea’s first goal of the evening. Then just before half time, Ronan Hayes scored a point to leave the scores level, 1-4 a piece at the break. In the second half, Claughaun scored the first two points, but Athea replied with two great points from Jason Kelly and Jack Denihan. We had a lot of possession at this stage, but we failed to convert it into scores and then a double blow for Athea came as Claughan scored two quick goals and left us with a mountain to climb. But fair play to this team as they fought back again, Sean Ryan who came on as a sub at half time was excellent and a Jack Denihan goal followed by points from James Ryan and Ronan Hayes left the minimum between the teams with a couple of minutes to go. Claughaun replied with a point and just before the final whistle they got a goal to win by 5 points. This was a very tough and physical match and great credit is due to all the players and their coaches Kevin O’ Keeffe, Gerard Ahern & Pa Ahern for getting this far, all bodes well for the future. Team: Joey Kelly, TJ Doherty, Conor Fitzgerald, James Ryan, Jason Kelly, Jason Dalton, Padraic Walsh, Tommy Quaid, Tony McAuliffe, Brian O’ Connor, Lorcan McAuliffe, Killian O’ Donoghue, William Sexton, Jack Denihan, Ronan Hayes, Sean Ryan, Paul Mahony, Donnacha McEnery, William McEnery & Padraig O’ Sullivan.

Megan Carroll gets call from the FAI
Megan Carroll received the call from the FAI on Wednesday last that all up and coming soccer players both male and female dream of getting. Megan will travel to Dublin on Friday next to attend trials for the Irish under 17 girls international panel. Megan, still only 14 had been spotted by FAI scouts while representing North Munster during the summer.
Megan began her soccer career with her local Athea United under 8 team at the tender age of 7, scoring on her debut against Ballingarry. Since then Megan’s rise in stature in the game has been nothing short of meteoric in the past 3 years. After being signed by Abbey United in 2009, Megan captained their under 14 team to success in the league cup final in 2010 defeating Newcastle West 3:1 in a thrilling final thus becoming the first Athea person to captain a winning cup final team at the new Desmond League venue in Askeaton.
Megan progressed to represent North Munster in the Gaynor Cup during the summer of 2011 where her performances attracted the attention of the FAI scouts. She subsequently signed for Newcastle West in August and has been instrumental in their 100% start to the current season.
Athea United , Abbey United and Newcastle West would like to join in congratulating Megan and wish her the very best of luck on Friday.
