Reidy Cup 2nd Round

Athea Utd A   (3) 5     Darren Murphy, Padraig Horgan (2), Cillian O’Connor, Ger Ahern,

Granagh Utd   (2) 2

The As continued their defence of the Reidy Cup with a comfortable enough win in the end though Granagh gave us plenty to think about in the first half when they actually led on two occasions. The visitors went ahead on five minutes but Darren Murphys fourth of the season had us soon level after twelve minutes. Soon after this we came to the assistance of the visitors when one of our players headed a super goal, unfortunately it was his own net that the ball ended up in. The sides were soon level again though when the in form Padraig Horgan made it two all and by half time we were ahead for the first time when Cillian O’Connor’s effort found the net via the woodwork. By this stage Granagh had being reduced to ten men and we pushed home our numerical advantage with further goals from Ger Ahern and Horgan with his second of the day.

Team: Noel Healy, Ryan Carroll, Padraig Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Sean McGrath, Padraig Horgan, Conor Mullane, Ger Ahern, Jamie Collins, Darren Murphy, Cillian O’Connor.

Referee: John Roche.

U/10 Division 2

Athea Utd     (2) 2     Eoin O’Shea, Andrew O’Riordan

Shountrade   (4) 6

The tens played their second home game of the season against Shountrade last Saturday afternoon at The Vales and it’s a credit to both sides given the very testing conditions which prevailed throughout the game. The game itself saw the visitors prove that bit too strong with both the Athea goals coming in the second half from Eoin O’Shea and Andrew O’Riordan.

Team: Brandon Finucane, Paric Enright, Michael Tierney, Danny Brady, Eoin Sheahan, Gavin Ambrose, Eoin O’Shea, Andrew O’Riordan. Thomas McEnery, Alex McEledowney, Luke Gleeson, Jack Hunt, Daire O’Shea, Pierce O’Brien.

Matches:

Thursday 20th of October:

U16’s:

Mick Neville park was the venue as Athea U-16’s took on Monagea in the County Semi-final on Thursday night last. Monagea made the brighter start and had our backs under pressure early on, but despite this, we were first to score when after 8 minutes Padraic Walsh rose the white flag. This point was to be our one and only score of the first half as Monagea kept up the pressure and scored 4 unanswered points to leave us 3 points down at half time. The story could have been worse only for the wayward shooting of the opposition, which would cost them dearly at the finish. At the start of the second half, we took the game more to Monagea and were rewarded when Gary Vaughan scored a long range point. Monagea started to dominate once again, but our backs coped much better in this half closing down the opposition quickly, forcing them into making mistakes and kicking the ball under pressure. Kieran Harnett in goals dealt with everything that came his way, all of which resulted in Monagea scoring only 2 points in the second half and this left us 4 points down with a nail biting 10 minutes to go. Suddenly the whole team came to life as Thomas Sexton split open the Monagea defence to score a superb point. An inspired decision by the coaches to move the outstanding Jonathan Fitzgerald to midfield and to bring on super sub William Sexton into the forwards prove to be a match winner on the night. Shortly afterwards, William scored a great point to leave just 2 points between the teams. Then deep into injury time a ball thrown up by the referee was won by Jonathan Fitzgerald who drove forward and kicked a long ball in, which found its way to William Sexton who buried it in the back of the Monagea net to the delight of all the Athea supporters who had travelled to see them and this saw us through to the final for the second year in a row. This game has proved that the Athea U-16 team showed great character when under severe pressure for most of the game and that their never give up attitude paid off in the end. We all now look forward to the County final in a few weeks. Well done to the whole team and their coaches Michael Reidy, Padraig Reidy & Martin Chawke. Team: Kieran Harnett, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Jason Daly O’ Flaherty, Dan Mullane, Jamie O’ Brien, Gary Vaughan, Thomas Sexton, Peter O’ Connor, Roger Carmody, Jack Denihan, Padraic Walsh, William Mullane, James Ryan, Joey Kelly, William Sexton, Ronan Hayes & Jason Dalton.

Saturday 22nd of October:

U12’s:

Our U-12’s capped off a great year when they played their last two games at Limerick’s Gaelic Grounds on Saturday morning last. Our first game was against Crecora and all the team did very well as Athea came out on top as winners at the final whistle. Following a request from “Limerick Coaching and Games” it was decided to stay on for a second match against our near neighbours Gerald Griffins. Athea totally dominated this match and ran out easy winners in the finish. Overall the whole team did very well playing extremely good football throughout and all received Limerick GAA t-shirts for their great efforts on the day. We would like to thank the Limerick Coaching and Games for providing lovely hot cups of tea on the day. A special word of thanks to the parents who travelled, and for staying on to the delight of all the children and for making this great day possible. Team: Cathal O’ Brien, Mark McAuliffe, Micheál Dalton, John Sexton, Timothy Tierney, Jamie O’ Brien, Sean Ryan, Jack Gleeson, Liam McAuliffe, Shane Ambrose, Micheál Ambrose, Grace Ryan, Andy Ahern & Joseph Dalton.

“Walking on Sunshine”

Well, there was a sense of ‘anticipation’, ‘wonder’- ‘eagerness’- and what was this ‘WALKING ON SUNSHINE’ fund-raising concert for the hall all about before we get to see it for the first time on Saturday night last in the hall. And I must say it was very appropriately named and it did indeed throw a lot of ‘ SUNSHINE’ into the lives of all those present  and I’m sure  also into all those involved in its production despite all the hard work and many hours of rehearsing that went into it.

From the moment it started until “THE SISTERS” ended it—it was a night filled with music, song, dance not to talk of the hilarious sketches. They say ‘Laughter is the best medicine’ and in these recessionary times we all need a bit of “laughter “and “sunshine” in our lives and indeed this Variety Show did just that! I’m not going to give too much away, as it would spoil it for those who haven’t yet got to see it. There’s something in it for everyone both young and not so young, music, song, dance and so much more.

Tom O’Keeffe made a great job of doing MC and introduced all the acts and incidentally we must congratulate himself and his good wife Anne who have just celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary. Best wishes to them both on this happiest of occasions.

The Athea Church Choir was wonderful and of course The Athea Wrenboys were quite a lively bunch. Tim and Karen Connelly – what a talented couple. I’m told Jessica and Damien Ahern put in many hours of surfing the internet – getting their ideas for the concert. Each and every one had a special part to play – and the teas and eats in the kitchen of course were welcome.  Declan O’Carroll did a marvellous job on lighting and sound.

What talent we have in this area and congratulations to them all in helping to fund-raise for our hall. Hopefully someone will do a DVD of it – no doubt it would sell like ‘HOT-BUNS’ well done to all who gave spot-prizes for the raffle also. Here’s to next weekend and “ WALKING ON SUNSHINE”.

A reminder that the AGM of Athea Community Games will take place this Wednesday October 19th at 8pm in the school.

Congratulations to Neilus and Linda Hunt on the birth of their new baby boy Tadgh. Also to the proud grandparents Mary and Henry Moran and Teady Hunt.

John Joe Tierney is holding a grand fund –raising concert for the hall on Saturday October 29th at 9.30pm. All welcome.

Please help the the Athea Ladies Football Club to raise a few Euros for their Club. They are holding a “CLOTHES DRIVE” on the 4th November from 6pm-8pm at The Clubhouse, so if you have any unwanted bags, shoes, clothes, soft toys etc bring them along.

They are also holding their Annual Raffle on the 5th November (Fair Day) with 1st Prize a Load of Timber, 2nd Prize – A Pony – tickets on sale shortly.

The U-12’s, U-14’s and U-16’s will have their day out on November 3rd to the Cinema and McDonalds. Only those who have their insurance paid will be allowed to travel.
