“A MIXED START TO THE SEASON”

U/16 Div 2

Athea Utd    (2) 5  Padraic Walsh (3), Phillip Daly, Ronan Hayes

Ballingarry  (2) 2

Our sixteens got their league campaign off to a positive start with a deserved win at home to Ballingarry last Tuesday night week. Indeed we had to come from two down early on before being level at the interval before clinical finishing in the second half gave us a five two win. Poor defending from a corner gave the visitors a very soft opener and soon after a counter attack saw their winger finish in style. Then came the comeback with Padraic Walsh drilling the ball inside the left post and the same player equalized from a corner just before the break. Two minutes into the second half we hit the front for the first time when Phillip Daly fired home from close range. It was end to end after this but with William Mullane having a strong game in defence and James Ryan very dependable between the posts there was no way back for the visitors. Padraic completed his hat trick with twelve minutes left with a sweet strike from twenty five yards that nestled in the top right corner. A quick break down the right nearly brought a goal for Jason Dalton who was denied by a last gasp tackle and the ball then squirming inches past the near post. With three minutes left great thinking by Brian O’Connor saw him take a corner quickly to Ronan Hayes and with the Ballingarry defence still organising itself Ronan planted the ball into the far corner. Full time 5-2 to Athea.

Team: James Ryan, Jack Denihan, Killian O’Donoghue, William Mullane, Ronan Hayes, Phillip Daly, Peter O’Connor, Brian O’Connor, Padraic Walsh, William Sexton, Pa O’Connor. Subs used: Tommy Quaid, Jason Dalton and JJ Sheehy.

Referee: Colm Dalton.

U/19 League Cup

Abbeyfeale Utd   (0) 2       Athea Utd        (0) 0

No luck for the U/19s in their second game of the league cup away to Abbeyfeale last Wednesday night with the hosts scoring twice in the second half. The second half didn’t go our way and it was here Dylan Griffin sustained a broken wrist. Glad to say that Dylan underwent a successful operation on Thursday morning and all in the club, especially his teammates wish him a very speedy return to action.

Team: Paul Kennedy, Kevin Murphy, David Sheehan, Jamie Sheehan, Shane Mulvihill, Danial Daly, Maurice Hayes, Dylan Griffin, Mark Horgan, Liam O’Connor, Ian Murphy. Subs used :Ryan Carroll, Michael Woods and Gary Vaughan.

Referee: John Roche.

Junior Div 1

Athea Utd  (0) 1   Darren Murphy

Killeaney  (1) 2

We had a local derby to kickoff the new junior season with Killeaney the visitors to The Vales. We had the better of the opening quarter but after this the game evened out and Killeaney hit the crossbar before taking the lead before the break with a very poor goal from our point of view as we had numerous chances to clear the ball. The second half saw us push for the equalizer but a breakaway saw them get a second before Darren Murphy pulled one back with a classy chip over the keeper. We had a good few corners after this but just couldn’t get an equalizer.

Team: Ryan Carroll, Sean McGrath, Martin Chawke, Padraig Reidy, Padraig Horgan, Michael Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Conor Mullane, Darren Murphy, Cillian O’Connor, Steven McEnery.

Subs used: Michael Mullane, David Sheehan and Gary Vaughan.

Referee: Pat O’Donnell

Athea Utd  B  (2) 3      Cillian O’Connor, Steven McEnery, Morgan O’Connor

NCW Rvs B     (0) 0

We were two up at the break with a Cillian O’Connor free kick and a close range finish from Steven McEnery after a cross from the end line by John Geoghegan. We then clinched the points when Morgan O’Connor scored a half volley ten minutes from time following a corner on the right by McEnery.

Team: Pa Kiely, Colm Hassett, Jason Quille, John Geoghegan, Sean McGrath, Tom Greaney, Morgan O’Connor, Eoghan Nash, Mike Twomey, Steven McEnery, Cillian O’Connor. Subs used :Gary Carroll, Kieran Dalton and Raymond Brouder

Fixtures:

West Minor A Final Feale Rangers v Cois Sionna Gaels, Sunday 4th September in Glin at 6.30pm.

Athea and Mountcollins minors play a combination of St Senan’s and Askeaton/Ballysteen in the West final.  Rangers, under new management of Noel Barry, have progressed unbeaten to the final, however on the occasion they beat Gaels were missing a number of their better players.  So a close final is expected.

County Intermediate Championship Athea v Mountcollins Friday 2nd September in Abbeyfeale at 6.45pm.  This is the final round of the championship.  A win or a draw will see qualify for a quarter final place.  Defeat would see the opposition leapfrog us in the group and our exit from the championship.  All support would be greatly appreciated for the above games.
