Athea Utd.

U/12 Division 2
Athea Utd (1) 4 Shane Dalton (2), Micah O’Connell, Grace Ryan
Bally Rovers (4) 4
A fantastic comeback by our under twelves saw them get a much deserved draw with Bally Rovers at The Vales last Monday evening. Indeed we had to do it the hard way as we found ourselves four goals down at one stage. Bally started well and were two up after just five minutes but after this we settled down and the impressive Shane Dalton was denied on two occasions by brilliant goalkeeping. Cathal O’Brien then made a brilliant save but unluckily the rebound fell to a Bally player to make it three nil to them. We pushed forward looking for the goal that would bring us back into it but a counter attack led to the visitors getting a fourth but determined play by Shane Dalton saw him eventually find the net just on half time.
The third quarter saw both sides cancel each other out before Athea hit back in devastating fashion. Great play at the back saw Shane Ambrose intercept a Bally attack and he found David O’Connor who then picked out Shane Dalton on the right and his cross came to Micah O’Connell and he found the bottom left corner. Game on now. Shane then hit the butt of the post before scoring from the penalty spot to leave a goal between the sides. The turning point of the game came when Cathal O’Brien made a brilliant save at the expense of a corner when Bally looked certain to put the game out of our reach. From this we attacked down the left wing and when the ball was crossed across the box it came to Grace Ryan who had timed her run to perfection and skilfully placed the ball inside the near post to give her side a deserved draw.
Full time 4 4 and a great game of soccer for the privileged few who braved the wind and cold to witness the homeside who, after a shaky start showed great character to come back and get a fully deserved draw. Well one to all the panel who gave us a game to behold. Their next game is this coming Saturday at The Vales with an early start time of 10.30am against Newcastle West Rovers. See ye all there Saturday.
Team: Cathal O’Brien, David O’Connor, Shane Ambrose, Joseph Dalton, Michael Dalton, Andy Ahern, David O’Sullivan, John Sexton, Jack O’Connor, Jason Dillon, Shane Dalton.
Subs all used were Micah O’Connell, Grace Ryan, Daniel McEndowney, Seamus Leahy and Ryan O’Connell.

Youths Division 1
Athea Utd (3) 3 Ian Murphy (2), Rici Hanley
Rathkeale (1) 3
The youths hosted Rathkeale in the league last Saturday in what was a repeat of last seasons 17s cup final and we should have repeated that win given the number of good chances we created. However we left the visitors off the hook and they will be glad to leave with a point. The in form Ian Murphy put us in front before the visitors levelled ten minutes before the break. Athea though finished strongly and Rici Hanley scored his first goal for the club after a sweet ball over the top from Ian Murphy put him clear down the wing before cutting in and shooting into the bottom corner. Having scored the second Hanley then turned provider for Murphy to get his second to stretch our lead before half time. Early in the second half Rathkeale made it three two with a good finish following a corner and after we missed some good chances they got in for a soft goal from our point of view. Full time 3 3.
Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Gary Vaughan, Ryan Carroll, Mark O’Connor, Jamie Sheehan, Shane Mulvihill, Maurice Hayes, Liam O’Connor, Aaron O’Connor, Kevin Murphy, Ian Murphy. Sub used Rici Hanley. Referee: Mike Houlihan.

Athea Utd (0) 4 James Ryan, Shane Dalton, JJ Sheehy, Ronan Hayes.
The fourteens got off to a great start in the league with a four nil win away to Adare Utd with all the goals coming in the second half. James Ryan put us ahead early in the second half and we added further goals from Shane Dalton, JJ Sheehy and Ronan Hayes so well done boys.
Team: Timothy Tierney, William McEnery, Sean Ryan, Cillian Liston, Mark McAuliffe, James Ryan, William Sexton, Ronan Hayes, Shane Dalton, JJ Sheehy, Jack Vaughan. Subs used: Gerry Barrett, Jack Gleeson and Donnacha McEnery. Referee: Paul O’Brien.

Junior Div 1
Athea Utd (1) 5 Padraig Horgan (2), Maurice Hayes (2), Ryan Carroll
Pallaskenry (0) 0
Five second half goals saw the A’s record another five nil win with Pallaskenry being put to the sword at The Vales last Sunday morning. Padraig Horgan scored a rare brace of goals before youths player Maurice Hayes, a second half sub followed suit with another two goal salvo for his first goals at junior level to put us well on our way. Another youths player Ryan Carroll also got his first junior goal to complete the rout and this sees us record back to back wins after defeats in our opening two league games. Next up is Rockhill Rovers next Sunday with a 1pm kick off at The Vales.
Team: Noel Healy, Ryan Carroll, Padraig Reidy, Conor Mullane, Sean McGrath, Cillian O’Connor, Joe Vaughan, Mike Reidy, Darren Murphy, Mark Horgan. Subs: Kevin O’Keeffe, Maurice Hayes. Referee: Sean Hartnett.
Junior Div 4
Athea Utd B (3) 5 Mark Horgan, Steven McEnery (2), Eoghan Nash, Cillian O’Connor
Feenagh B (1) 2
After a somewhat unlucky defeat away to St Itas last Sunday the B’s rediscovered their goal scoring touch with a five two afternoon success over visitors Feenagh B. Indeed it was the visitors who scored first but we were soon level when Mark Horgan found the net and then a brace from Steven McEnery had us three one ahead at the interval. Eoghan Nash with his first of the season gave us more daylight before Cillian O’Connor with a trademark free kick rounded off our scoring. They pulled one more back towards the end but Athea were full value for this win.
Team: Paudie Lynch, William Cronin, Cillian O’Connor, Padraig Horgan, Jason Quille, Mark Horgan, Eoghan Nash, Pa Kiely, Kieran Dalton, Steven McEnery, Bobby Barrett. Subs

Matches:
Thursday 8th of September:
Under 12’s:
Athea 2-5, Cappagh 3-3.
Our under 12 footballers travelled to Cappagh to take on the locals on Thursday evening last. Even though Athea were missing a number of players and were trailing at half time by 7 points, all the team did extremely well coming back into the game in the second half only to loose out by one point in the finish and were unlucky not to have won the game when we hit the crossbar and the post a couple of times. The final score was Athea 2-5, Cappagh 3-3.
Team: Cathal O’ Brien, Timothy Tierney, Cillian Liston, Micheál Ambrose, Andy Ahern, Mark McAuliffe, Shane Ambrose, Michéal Dalton, Sean Ryan, John Sexton, Shane Dalton, Liam McAuliffe, Jack Gleeson, David O’ Sullivan, Gerry Barrett, Donnacha Clancy & Joseph Dalton.
Friday 9th of September
Under 10’s:
Athea U-10’s travelled cross country to Raheenagh last Friday evening to take on Killeedy on a very windy evening. This game was played in four 10 minute quarters. Playing with the wind in the first quarter we found it hard to get going and were under pressure early on. Killeedy had a number of attacks up the field but some great defending by Michael Tierney and Jamie O’Mahony kept them at bay. But at the end of the first quarter we were a goal down. In the second quarter we were once again under severe pressure and by half time we were 9 points down. In the third quarter we were much improved, our mid-field started to take control making chances for our ever improving forwards Sean Barrett, Evan Wallace, Luke Gleeson and Jack Hunt but we could not find our scoring touch. Still 9 points down at the start of the last quarter playing into a strong wind, we started to get on top all over the field. Aidan Curry now in goals had some great kick outs and with our four superb girls Ciara O’ Shea, Grace Ryan, Sarah O’ Connor and Claire Carmody on top in defence we were able to put Killeedy under pressure. Our first score was a great goal from Eoin Sheahan, this was followed quickly by a well taken goal by David O’ Connor. As Athea piled on the pressure and time nearly up a well taken free kick by Thomas McEnery was fielded by Jack O’ Connor who was then fouled inside the square and we were awarded a penalty. Jack then stepped up to take the penalty and stuck it to the corner of the net to complete a great come back and the game ended in a draw. Team: Aidan Curry, David O’ Connor, Jack O’ Connor. Sarah O’ Connor, Ciara O’ Shea, Grace Ryan, Claire Carmody, Luke Gleeson, Sean Barrett, Michael Tierney, Eoin Sheahan, Evan Wallace, Thomas McEnery, Jamie O’ Mahony & Jack Hunt.
Sunday 11th of September
U13 County Semi-final:
Athea 1-3, Claughaun 2-4
On Sunday evening last, our U-13’s were at home to Claughaun in the County semi-final. We had 23 players togged out for what turned out to be an exciting match. In the first few minutes Claughaun were first to score with a goal, but our defense tightened up and we managed to keep their scoring at bay. Early injuries did not help Athea’s cause but this did not deter the team. Ronan Hayes scored our first two points, followed by a point from Alan Kelly which leveled the match before half time. In the second half, Claughaun got the better of us and scored 3 quick points and a goal to put them steaming ahead. With another point from the visiting team, we were 7 points down but we did not give up. Micheál Ambrose who had an outstanding game in the backs started many of the Athea attacks which were to follow, but try as we may we could not get the scores we needed. This proved costly in the end as a late Liam McAuliffe goal left just 4 points between the teams at the final whistle. This is a promising young team and it was a great achievement by all the players and their coaches to get this far in the competition. Team: Timothy Tierney, Brian Sheahan, Padraig O’ Sullivan, William McEnery, T.J Doherty, Micheál Ambrose, William Sexton, Sean Ryan, J.J Sheehy, Ronan Hayes, Liam McAuliffe, Alan Kelly, Donnacha McEnery, Conor Fitzgerald, James Ryan, Micheál Dalton, Mark McAuliffe, Jamie O’ Brien, Cillian Liston, William Sexton, Shane Dalton, Jack Glesson & Gerry Barrett.
