ATHEA COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS
Hi To all from the Athea CFR’s. Well I cant believe its nearly three years of activity from its eraliest and humble beginnings. The system can lay claim to over 80 + persons having been trained in life support skills. The “First Responders”, have indeed had a Significant impact on the community we serve. The responders are available every evening 6pm – until next morning 08,00 and all weekends from Friday evening 6pm until Mondays 08,00. The level of expertise in the hands of the Athea First Responder personnel is constantly evolving, firstly all responders are trained in life support skills by undertaking the Irish Heart Foundation, Heart Saver AED programme, many CFR’s went onto undertake the Irish Red Cross, practical First Aid course. During 2010 all responders underwent Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (Phecc) standard “Cardiac First Responder” programme in order that the Athea CFR could be relied upon by the HSE West as an “immediate care service capable of being mobilised by the 112 999 emergency call” . We have been providing Emergency Life Support cover directed by the ambulance service since 08 02 2010
Our Most recent challenge was on the morning Sunday 24, July (yes road racing days). The Roads were in the process of being closed ready for motorcycling action when
at 09.47 the CFR dedicated Mobile received a call to respond to a member of the local community at the very end of the patch, on the route out to Carrigkerry. We were fortunate, amongst all the activity, to be assisted by Garda Gerry Griffin’s swift intervention by securing a Garda traffic corps vehicle to escort First Responders through the extra vehicles and people around that morning. Then on Monday evening 25 Dr Kieran Murphy Medical Director for Athea CFR held a debrief and concluded with our evaluation of events.
We were set up to make a difference, and thats what we do. Our slogan being ” We are on your doorstep and We are on our way” Congratulations to all the First responders for all the brilliant work you do. Keep up your intrepid activity. If you are interested in gaining Life support knowledge and skills then call Rodge Byrne, Training Director: 086 310 3233.
We will be offering training to community members in the Autumn, joining the CFR group is an option Not a requirement. Why Not come along to our Third AGM, Con Colbert Hall, 05 September: 7.30 – 9.00 to find out more or to contribute to this amazing service
