Athea Road Race Press Release

“Grand Final Race In Athea deemed as Race of the Season !”

Grand Final Race 1. William Dunlop 2. Michael Dunlop 3. John Burrows

Last Weekend saw the Welcome Return of a spectacular Athea Road Race Event. Top riders gave locals, visitors & supporters a heart stopping experience with their adrenaline fuelled machines going through their paces at record breaking speeds.

William Dunlop was in top form as he was crowned Man of the Meeting along with taking the podium for wins in the 250cc, 125cc and The Grand Final.

Huge crowds were in attendance all along the West Limerick Circuit, which was formally opened by Minister Jimmy Deenihan on Sunday morning.

Live music entertained the crowds on the streets of the village along with demonstrations from the RSA with their Audi A4 roll over simulator. Local bands such as “Mad for Road” and “The Four Stones” played to major crowds.

The Hosting of this event showcased Athea village locally, nationally and internationally.

All in all it was a breathtaking experience.

Amusements, trading and merchandising stalls dotted the village and surrounding areas for the event.

The Spinies from Spin South West were a very popular feature in the village on Saturday night.

Prize giving was held in The Gables on Sunday evening to a packed audience and was presented by commentator James Carroll. The Grand Final trophies were sponsored by Estuary Print and Trophies and The Loughnane family sponsored the Man of the Meeting cup.

The club would like to thank all the people who made this event possible in any way, along with all the people living on the circuit for their support during the road closures.

The Club would also like to thank each and every one of the riders, too many to mention, along with our sponsors West Limerick Resources, Shannon Development, Paul Greaney, Clinton Enterprises and many others for their dedication and commitment to this major event.

During the event it was noted by many that a record number of visitors travelled great distances with their families to the event on bikes, in motorhomes etc and this had a positive knock-on effect to the local economy in these challenging times.

Health and Safety of the event was taken care of by Pat Bourke and members of the Abbeyfeale Search and Rescue helped out with crowd control.

Plans are currently being put in place for next years event !!!!!!!!!!!!!
