The winning streak around the locality continued on Saturday night last, with Maura O’ Connor winning €57,000 cash and two cars valued at €30,000 on The Big Money Game on RTE. The previous Sunday night Mike Aherne and Margaret O’ Keeffe shared the Killeaney soccer club Lottery Jackpot of €10,600 at Moore’s Bar. Jody Heffernan Old Mill started the trend when he won the 1st prize of €18,000 in the Limerick G.A.A. Development Draw on July 1st. We hope fortune continues to shine down on us and the trend continues.
Last Friday was Saint Swithin’s Day and thankfully we escaped the rain and the curse of 40 days rain according to the old weather prediction for the day.
George Langan has composed a song in tribute to Rooskagh’s own Tom McCarthy and it is getting regular air play on West Limerick Radio.
John McCarthy from Saint Kieran’s was very prominent in the Limerick defence in their 5 point win over Waterford in the All Ireland football qualifier at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening.
Last Sunday’s Mass in Saint Mary’s was a 5th Anniversary Mass for the late Sean O’Connor, Carrigkerry who is still remembered with fondness by all around the village. The Church gate Collection was in aid of Carrig Celtic soccer club.
Darren Clarke did Ireland proud on Sunday when he won the British Open Golf Championship and his first major.
A tea, coffee, goodies evening in aid of Saint Molua’s Well Project takes place in Neary’s Lounge Bar Ardagh this Wednesday evening July 20th at 8.00 pm and all are welcome.

Congratulations to Maura O’Connor, Ballyloughane, Carrigkerry, who won a total of €87,000 on last Saturday’s The Big Money Game on RTE. The total included €7,000 cash plus two cars valued at €15,000 each, and €50,000 cash on spinning the wheel.

The death has taken place of Sr. Cornelia Magner, St Anne’s Convent, Rathkeale, and late of Reen’s House, Ardagh, peacefully at the Convent on Sunday 10th July. Sr. Cornelia’s (Mary) remains were removed from St Anne’s Convent on Tuesday 12th July to Saint Mary’s Church Rathkeale. She was laid to rest following Requiem Mass in the adjoining cemetery on Wednesday 13th July.

Sympathy is extended to her sisters, Tilly Curtin, Breda Gleeson, and Eileen Lyons, her Mercy Community, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, brothers-in-law, cousins, relatives and friends. May she rest in Peace.

Mullane’s Supermarket and Filling Station, in Knockdown, Athea, reopened for business on Thursday last 14th July.

It will be open from 8am-9pm Monday-Saturday and 9am-9pm Sunday. It was sadly missed since it closed a number of months ago, after many years of dedicated service to the community. Best wishes to Ita and Ta for the future.

Best wishes to Liam and Geraldine O’ Keeffe, who recently opened a Butcher’s Shop in The Market Yard, Newcastle West on Thursday the 14th of July. Geraldine is a daughter of Catherine and Timmy Madigan, Lisgordan, Ardagh.

It is encouraging to see in these times, and they deserve our support.

Father Dennis Mullane P.P. celebrated the annual Graveyard Mass in Kilbradern  on Sunday 10th July. The weather was lovely and a large crowd attended to hear Fr Mullane trace the history of the Cemetery and the importance of our faith. The graves were also blessed after the Mass and the Folk Choir sang some nice hymns during the Mass.

Saint Kieran’s defeated Feohanagh by 1-13 to 1-12 in Round 3 of the West Limerick Junior A Hurling Championship at Newcastle West on Saturday 2nd July.  They top Group 1 with full points after 3 rounds and play Tournafulla and Feenagh- Kilmeedy in the remaining games.

Saint Kieran’s defeated Pallasgreen by 1-7 to 0-7 in the County Junior B Football League Semi Final.

A very enjoyable week was had by the 121 boys and girls at the recent Cúl Camp in Coolcappa .

The club went bag packing in Tesco Supermarket Newcastle West on Saturday 16th July.

Emma Duggan represented Limerick in the Primary Game, before the Munster Ladies Senior Football Final in Killarney, on Saturday 9th July.

 

Congratulations to Old Mill who defeated Ahane to win the County U-12 Girls Novice A title in Pallaskenry.

Askeaton Art Group Exhibition ”Fusion” was on display in Newcastle West Library since the launch on Thursday 23 June.

A lot of people called to see the paintings on display and a number were purchased which is good to see in these difficult times.

Carol Noonan from Clounleharde, had some lovely paintings, decorated bottles and painted stones on display. They were eagerly sought after and purchased which is wonderful news and most encouraging for our local artist. Carol is also available to do commissions for people, as are the other members of the group

The annual Newcastle West Flower Show will be held in The Community Centre, Newcastle West on Wednesday 10th August from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and on Thursday 11th August.
