Community Games
U-12’s Boys Soccer:
Athea U-12’s community games soccer team have been busy over the last couple of weeks playing matches in their group. In their first match we played Foynes at the Vales. We played very impressively all through the game dominating in all areas of the pitch as we lead 4-1 at half time. In the second half a superb save from a penalty by Cathal O’ Brien in goals sparked Athea into life and eventually running out winners on a scoreline of Athea 9- 1 Foynes.
In our second match away to Askeaton/Ballysteen we started slowly, but after a while we got going and lead 4-0 at half time. In the second half our backs were put under pressure but they stood up to it well and did not concede any goal, as Athea ran out 7-0 winners on the night.
In our final match in the group we travelled to Kildimo to take on Pallaskenry/Kildimo in what turned out to be one of the most exciting games of the year. We started brightly with Shane Dalton scoring a great goal to put us into the lead. Soon afterwards the home team took control and we conceded 3 goals in a 15 minute period. Our defence tightened up at the back and our midfield started to take control and thanks to 2 more goals form Shane Dalton we were level at half time 3-3. In the second half we went ahead after another fine goal from Shane Dalton put us 4-3 up. The home team levelled shortly afterwards. Once again we went ahead after a goal mouth scramble lead to Shane scoring his 5th goal of the night. With 5 minutes to go the referee was very harsh on Athea when awarding a penalty to Pallakenry/Kildimo which they converted to level matters once again. Then, as time ran out, the home team took the lead with a goal in the last minute. Athea desperately tried to get an equaliser but it was not to be and the final score was Pallaskenry/Kildimo 6 – 5 Athea.
These have been three outstanding performances from all the boys on this team and they deserve great credit for their effort and the discipline they have shown throughout. We now wish them the very best of luck as they play Knocklong/Glenbrohane in the County semi-final on Tuesday evening the 14th of June at 7pm. Venue to be confirmed.
Team: Cathal O’ Brien, David O’ Connor, Shane Ambrose, Michéal Dalton, Joseph Dalton, Shane Dalton, Cillian Liston, John Sexton, David O’ Sullivan, Jack O’ Connor, Jason Dillon & Andy Ahern.
