ATHEA UTD.

“A’s TO CONTEST LEAGUE CUP FINAL ON SUNDAY”

Next Sunday afternoon in Clounreask the curtain comes down on the Athea Utd soccer season when our A’s will be biding to win their second cup of the season when they contest the Division 1 League Cup Final against Ballingarry. This will be a tough challenge for us against a side who have already won the league in impressive fashion and will be fancied to do the double. On our way to the decider we won one nil away to Kildimo Utd while in the semi final we scraped a narrow two one win away to Abbeyfeale Utd B. On the evidence of the league table Ballingarry will start as firm favourites but in our league meetings there was very little to choose between the sides, Ballingarry winning at home two one while at The Vales a fortunate goal from a corner saw the league champions prevail one nil. So far this season the club have contested three finals, deservedly winning two and very unlucky not to have won the other. By late Sunday evening we will hopefully have added a third cup for the trophy cabinet.

Kick off on Sunday is at 12.30pm and we are looking forward to big support for Athea next Sunday afternoon in Clounreask.

Last Saturday night at The Gables The Limerick Desmond Schoolboys/Girls League held its Annual Awards Night and here we were, like last year doubly represented with two award winners namely Luke Gleeson and Kevin Murphy. Luke was a joint winner in U/8 Division 1 and he was presented with his award by League Chairman David Naughton with Kevin Murphy winning the U/16 Division 1 award and he was presented with his award by Donie O’Gorman, Desmond League Referee.

Also on the night the Limerick Desmond U/11 Academy Squad that recently won the Quadrangular Inter League Tournament with wins over Limerick County and Cork were presented with their winners medals, here again we were doubly represented with Timothy Tierney and Sean Ryan members of this successful squad getting their winners medals. So another good season for Athea Utd players with the Limerick Desmond Schoolboys League and well done to all.

Wednesday 18th of May:
Athea 4-8  Ballybrown 2-3.
The Athea Under 13’s travelled to Clarina to take on Ballybrown in the second round of the U-13 league. In the first half both sides were evenly matched even though Athea were playing with the wind. JJ Sheehy got our first goal of the night followed by a point from Sean Ryan. William Sexton added a further two points as Ballybrown lead by two points at half time. In the second half it was a different story as Athea dominated in all areas playing very well into a strong breeze. Brian Sheahan got our first goal of the half closely followed by a goal from Alan Kelly. William Sexton was on target yet again as he scored two more great points and James Ryan also getting on the score board with a couple of points. Athea were then awarded a penalty and Ronan Hayes slotted it home to put the result beyond doubt. Just before the final whistle William Sexton scored our last point. Once again this was a fantastic team performance and they deserved their win on the night.
