JUNIORS LIFT REIDY CUP
REIDY CUP FINAL
Athea Utd 2 Ferry Rangers 0.
Scorers: Darren Murphy (pen), Pa Ahern
Having lost out in last season’s Reidy Cup Final against Glantine and the Desmond Cup Final against Rathkeale our juniors made amends with a thoroughly deserved victory over Ferry Rangers last Friday night in Clounreask. We dominated from the off and in truth should have won by more but having said this we are delighted to at last get our hands on a trophy at junior level.
On a lovely night for football and on a quality surface we took the game to Ferry with Kevin O’Keeffe having an early chance before we took the lead with a Darren Murphy penalty, the spot kick being awarded after Jamie Collins was brought down in the area. The Ferry keeper remained busy and he did very well to tip a chip from O’Keeffe away for a corner. John Cotter came on for the injured Padraig Reidy and this necessitated a few positional switches but in an overall context this didn’t hinder the side as we continued to dominate matters. With about five minutes to half time we doubled our lead when Pa Ahern, having received the ball on the edge of the area powered an unstoppable screamer into the top left corner.
We continued to be the better team in the second half apart from a mini spell for Ferry it was in this period they had their best chance only for their substitute to head against the crossbar after Tomas Quinn had punched away a cross. We had chances to extend the lead through Jamie Collins, John Cotter and a Martin Chawke header before that Ferry miss while it took a quality tackle to deny Darren Murphy a second goal. Full time Athea 2 Ferry 0.
After the game skipper Padraig Horgan was presented with the Reidy Cup by League Chairman Mike Hanley while Padraig was also the recipient of the man of the match trophy for his excellent display at right back and this was presented to him by Frank Neligan, PRO of the Desmond League.
Team: Tomas Quinn, Padraig Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Tom Collins, Martin Chawke, Padraig Horgan (capt), Joe Vaughan, Pa Ahern, Jamie Collins, Kevin O’Keeffe, Darren Murphy. Subs used: John Cotter, Conor Mullane and Timmy Enright. Also Mike Reidy, Ger Collins and Brian Ahern.
U/10 Division 2
Kildimo Utd 0 Athea Utd 2.
Scorers: Ryan O’Connell, John Sexton (pen)
The under tens bounced back from a few bad results to record an impressive two nil win away to second in the table Kildimo Utd last Saturday afternoon. In our first home game in the league we defeated Kildimo four one and since then the opposition have remained unbeaten so from that point of view last Saturdays result was a very good one. It was scoreless at half time but Athea struck decisively on two occasions in the second half, firstly when Ryan O’Connell broke the deadlock and when John Sexton scored from the penalty spot after a defender had handled the ball in the area. So overall a good team performance with all the team playing well. Next up is a cup game when we will play Shannonside at The Vales next Tuesday evening at 7pm.
Team: Cathal O’Brien, Michéal Dalton, Ryan O’Connell, Joseph Dalton, David O’Connor, Shane Dalton, Andy Ahern, Jack O’Connor, John Sexton, Micah O’Connell, Shane Ambrose, Jason Dillon, David O’Sullivan.
