We are delighted to announce that our U-12 football team have been chosen to play in Croke Park on Wednesday the 27th of April. This will be a fantastic opportunity for our young footballers. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Matches:

U-13s:  Athea 3-5  Cappagh 0-2

Our U-13’s had their first outing of the season on Wednesday evening last. They put in a fantastic performance dominating in all areas of the field for most of the match. William Sexton opened the scoring with a fantastic point, which was soon followed by Athea’s first goal scored by Brian Sheahan. With our defence on top led by James Ryan, we continued to pile on the pressure with points from JJ Sheehy and William Sexton. Then a great goal just before half time by Alan Kelly had us in the driving seat. In the second half Cappagh came more into the game, but a couple of brilliant save by Timothy Tierney in goals kept them at bay. As the game progressed Alan Kelly and Ronan Hayes added a point each and Brian Sheahan sealed victory with his second goal as Athea ran out 12 point winners on the night. Team: Timothy Tierney, Padraig O’ Sullivan, Micheál Ambrose, Mark McAuliffe, Jack Vaughan, Shane Ambrose, James Ryan, JJ Sheehy, William Sexton, Alan Kelly, Ronan Hayes, Cillian Liston, Brian Sheahan, David Sheahan, Donnacha McEnery, William McEnery, Seán Ryan & Liam McAuliffe.

U-12 Blitz:

Athea Coiste na nÓg U-12s

Our U-12’s travelled to Foynes on Saturday evening last to take part in the first blitz of the year. In the first match we took on St. Senans, this was a very close match as Athea and St. Senans matched each other throughout the field. We had great scores coming from Shane Dalton, Brian Sheahan, Alan Kelly, Daniel McEldowney and John Sexton. There was also great defending by Shane Ambrose and Micheál Dalton and with a couple of good saves by Cathal O’ Brien in goals which made sure we won in the finish by 2 points. In our second match we played Glin and as scores were hard to come by it was always going to be a tough game. Great goal keeping by Timothy Tierney and great defensive work by Micheál Ambrose kept the Glin attack at bay. But a goal each from Shane Dalton, David Sheahan and Alan Kelly ensured we won by a goal at the final whistle. In our final match against Gerald Griffins, Athea really turned on the style as we ran out comfortable winners with great scores from John Sexton, Brian Sheahan, Jamie O’ Brien, Alan Kelly and Jack O’ Connor. This was a great performance by the whole team and the coaches were very pleased with the huge effort they put in on the day. Team: Timothy Tierney, Micheál Ambrose, Micheál Dalton, Shane Ambrose, Cathal O’ Brien, Alan Kelly, Jamie O’ Brien, Shane Dalton, Daniel McEldowney, David Sheahan, Brian Sheahan, John Sexton, Jack O’ Connor & David O’ Connor.

Division 4 League

Athea Utd B 0   St Bens  0

The Bs were home to St Bens last Sunday morning in their last league game needing a win to maintain second place in the league but knew it would be tough against a Bens side that clinched the league title the previous Sunday. This game was hard fought with the homeside doing most of the pressing in the opening half but chances were at a premium, indeed the best chance of that half came to Bens before the break but Mickey Hayes was equal to it. The second half was nip and tuck with Athea again playing some neat football which deserved a goal and twice towards the end we nearly got it with Tom Greaney and Stephen McEnery going very close. The game ended scoreless and as a result of other games in the division Athea will finish a very creditable third in what has being a great debut season in the league for the Bs. However their season isn’t over yet as next Sunday at The Vales they will host Glantine B in the Divisional League Cup with a semi final place up for grabs.

NB: All concerned wish Tom Greaney a quick return from the injury he sustained on Sunday.

Team: Mickey Hayes, John Geoghegan, Tom Greaney, Sean McGrath, Conor McGrath, Pa Kiely, Mike Twomey, Eoin Nash, Gary Carroll, Stephen McEnery, Bobby Barrett.

Subs used: Kieran Dalton and William Cronin.

DIVISION 1 LEAGUE

Athea Utd  A 2 Glantine A 1

Scorers: Darren Murphy (2, 1 pen)

A badly needed three points were picked up by the As on Sunday afternoon last when a Darren Murphy brace gave us a two one win over visitors Glantine. We opened the scoring when Murphy converted from the spot after a handball in the area but five minutes later Glantine equalized from a penalty of their own for another handball and at half time it was one all. The second half was just as close as the first with the highlight being Murphys second goal, the striker racing into the area after a delicate flick on by Stephen McEnery. From then till the end both sides had chances but overall Athea deserved the three points.

Team: Tomas Quinn, Michael Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Tom Collins, Martin Chawke, Padraig Horgan, Kevin O’Keeffe, Conor Mullane, John Cotter, Darren Murphy, Mark Horgan. Subs used: Steven McEnery, William Cronin.

Shannonside 3 Athea Utd 2

Scorers: Brian O’Connor, Ronan Hayes

The 14s played their last league game of the season away to Shannonside last Saturday morning and their league campaign ended on a disappointing note with a three two loss. We actually led this game two nil at one stage with goals from Brian O’Connor and Ronan Hayes before the homeside got one back before the break. Early in the second half they equalized and went ahead five minutes from time. We had a great chance to level it with a Peter O’Connor free kick but the keeper made a brilliant save when he tipped the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety.
