‘Many Congratulations’

Congratulations and Happy 50th Birthday wishes go this week to Noreen Murphy of Upper Dirreen, Athea who had a great celebration on Saturday night last at The Top of the Town and was joined by her family, relatives and many friends. A great night was enjoyed by everyone.

We also send congratulations to Caroline Chawke and Vinny Collins of Templeathea on the birth of their 2nd little baby, a new little sister for Emma. They are naming her Jessie. Congratulations are also extended to the very proud grandparents Marian and Dick Chawke of Gortnagross.

Well done to everyone who supported the recent Cash Bonanza fund-raising draw for the Memorial Hall, both inside and outside the parish. The debt has now been reduced to €59,675 and this is great news. With everyone’s continued support and fund-raising ideas the debt can be further reduced.

Congratulations to the Athea Basketball teams who have been winning all around them over the last few days. They are doing extremely well in the U-14’s National Schools League and will travel for a 3rd time next Monday to U.L. to take on yet another opposing team. They also did very well on Sunday last in the Community Games. Best of luck to all teams for their forthcoming games and to their dedicated trainer Trish Aherne.

Congratulations to Anne and Willie Flavin of Gortdromagowna who organised a grand Irish Night at Gerard White’s on Saturday night last as a fund-raiser for the Chernobyl Children’s fund. It is hoped to bring 22 children with 2 interpreters for a holiday to Kerry this year from a rural part of Belarus. A further fund-raising Irish Night will be held on Saturday, April 9th at Brown Joe’s. Thanks to all who supported the night. Don’t forget this Friday is ‘Daffodil Day’ if you have any cakes or buns etc you might donate them to the tea- morning at O’Riordan’s Pharmacy. All support for this worthy cause would be appreciated.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Scanlon family on the death of Bridie, Upper Athea over the weekend. She was much loved by all and will be sadly missed by family, relatives and friends ‘May her gentle soul rest in peace’

Best of luck to Athea United who play Ferry Rangers in the Reidy Cup in Clounreask at 7.30pm on Friday 25th March.
