The death has taken place of Liam Duggan, Ballymacelligott, Co Kerry and the Commons, Ardagh, on Monday May 8. He was the son of Majella and John, the Commons, and in his late thirties. He was a keen golf player who was associated with many clubs over his too short life. A Memorial for Liam took place in Harnett’s Funeral Home, Abbeyfeale on Monday, May 15. We extend our sympathy to his wife Catherine, children Jack and Amelia, parents, parents-in-law, sister, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, relatives and friends. May he rest in Peace.

The death has taken place of Jeananne Lenihan, nee Sheehy, 7 The Forge Feenagh and formerly of Barnigue Carrigkerry. She was only in her early thirties and she suffered ill health for many years. She lay in repose at Reidys Funeral Home Newcastle West on Friday May 19 from 6pm to 8pm. Arriving at St Ita’s Church, Feenagh on Saturday morning for 12 Requiem Mass, followed by burial afterwards in Feenagh cemetery.  We extend our sympathy to her husband Declan, children Shane, Meadbh, parents John, Bridie, mother in law, father in law, brothers, sisters, brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. May she rest in Peace.

We extend our sympathy to Nancy and Raymond Brouder and family Gortnadroma, on the death of Nancy’s sister Josie Golding, nee Woulfe, Churchtown Road, Newcastle West on Tuesday May 9 at Saint Catherine’s Nursing Home. Her remains were removed from Reidy’s Funeral Home to Newcastle West Church on Thursday and following Requiem Mass she was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery on Friday May 12. Sympathy is also extended to her sons Joe, Patrick, Tommy, Gerald and Brian and daughters Mary and Karen and extended family members. May she rest in Peace.

People in the locality were saddened to hear of the death of Jim Begley who owned a hardware business in Bridge Street, Newcastle West for many years. He was the friendly face behind the counter, firstly at Egan’s Hardware, who customers liked to interact with and they doing their business. A native of Knockaderry he was a well known sportsman in his young days. He was a member of the Knockaderry team that won the West Junior Hurling championship in 1967, and he also played with Western Gaels, and Ardagh before he retired. His grandchildren are currently very successful in the athletic arena. May he rest in Peace.

Congratulations to Eoin Burke, Cappagh a member of the Ardagh/Carrigkerry Comhaltas branch who received an overall distinction in Grade 8 of the SCT Exams. He received the Micheál Ó hÉidhin medal at the National Comhaltas Congress in Dublin.

Congratulations to Eimear Colbert, Kilcolman and Rachel Mullane, fellow student at Coláiste Mhuire, who were first place winners in the Senior Life-Sciences category at SCIFest in LIT on April 27. Their project was titled: Does the effectiveness of a foliar spray made from nettles vary with water hardness?

Congratulations and best wishes in the future to Stephanie Muckell, Ardagh and Brendan Walsh who were married in St, Molua’s Church, Ardagh on Saturday May 13.

Parishioners in the Coolcappa/Kilcolman parish have contributed €1,523.57 towards the annual Lenten Trocaire appeal.

In the Desmond Division 3 League Cup Carrig Celtic B drew 1-1 away with Knockaderry on Sunday May 14. Creeves Celtic lost 2-1 at home to Ferry  Rangers, with Brian Nash getting their goal. As a result Carrig Celtic B will meet Ferry Rangers in the final.

 

A meeting to put a defibrillator in place in Carrigkerry village was held on Tuesday May 9 and a good crowd was in attendance. A fundraising target of €2,000 was set to pay for the purchase and maintenance of this life saving machine. It was decided to start with a house to house envelope collection, to be followed by a once off raffle. The training on how to use the defibrillator will be held over two evenings and a Saturday morning in Carrigkerry Community Centre. A list of interested people has been drawn up and any other person interested in being added can contact Carrigkerry Community Centre 069-76667 during office hours, or Pat at 087/2750061.

West Limerick 102fm monthly car boot sale has been discontinued due to a decline in interest and sales after twelve years. Many thanks to all the people who helped in running it and also to the stall holders who displayed their wares and the general public who supported it.

Donie Lyons from Dromreask, Glin, launched his new CD The Lovely Banks of Blaine at Barrett’s Bar Glin on Sunday May 14. It was launched by Nora Butler the renowned traditional singer from Tipperary and it contains 22 tracks.  It contains 14 familiar songs from around his locality and 8 selections of sweet flute music he is famous for. The songs include; The Lovely Banks of Blaine, Moonlight Whiskeyhall, Lovely Athea, Poll an Eas, Lather and Shave and The Exile from Coole West. Thanks to Donie these will now be preserved well into the future for people to enjoy. The CD is currently on sale in the local shops in Glin, Lyons shop Abbeyfeale, Brouder’s shop Athea, and Moloney’s shop in Carrigkerry. We extend best wishes to Donie, who is a real gentleman, and most helpful in supporting local events, on his latest achievement.

The Old Mill Ladies Football Club are holding a Coffee Morning at the Desmond Complex Newcastle West on Friday May 26 from 9am to 1pm. All donations of buns and cakes will be greatly appreciated as well as support on the day. The sponsored walk and the used clothes collection will be held on June 25/26.

The annual Milford Hospice Memorial walk takes place on Sunday May 28 at 12 noon.  It will start at the UL Sports Arena, and finish at Milford Hospice. You must register to participate on www.milfordcarecentre.ie phone 061-485859. It will be followed by a special ceremony in which loved ones will tie tribute ribbons on the Memorial tree in the grounds of Milford  Care Centre in memory of deceased family members and friends.
