The 1921 drought stands out as the most severe and most widespread drought in Europe since the start of the 20th century. The precipitation deficit in all seasons was large, but in none of the seasons in 1920 and 1921 was the precipitation deficit the largest on record. The severity of the 1921 drought relates to the conservative nature of drought which amplifies the lack of precipitation in autumn and winter into the following spring and summer.

Weather 1920; Carrick-on-Shannon, 12 January 1920 – The main roads on both the Leitrim and Roscommon sides of Carrick-on-Shannon are flooded today after fierce winds, accompanied by rain, hail, thunder and lightning, swelled the waters of the River Shannon to the point of bursting its banks. In Roscommon, some houses were knocked down by the force of the gale, and there are reports of cattle being killed by lightning.
In Tipperary and Limerick rivers also burst their banks, leaving low-lying areas completely submerged by water and roads in and out of certain localities impassable.

Woman Starves Herself To Death
A waitress from Co. Limerick, who suffered from the starvation disease Anorexia Nervosa, and whose diet consisted of coffee and crackers, was only 4.5 stone in weight when she died, an inquest was told in Limerick yesterday.
The pathologist, Dr. J. W. Koten, Regional Hospital, told the jury that he carried out a post mortem and described the body as a Belsen or Auschwitz type.
The inquest on Miss Ann McSweeney of Carrigoreilly, Caherconlish, Co. Limerick, was told that efforts on the part of the dead woman’s relatives to get her to eat or to get medical attention had failed. She was very upset since her mother’s death and had not eaten properly.
The coroner, Mr. Tom Mitchell, was told that the woman died from pneumonia on August 21. Dr. Koten said that such instances of starvation were not rare by any means.
“We see a case in our (Regional) hospital every two or three months,” he said. ‘The starvation was caused by Anorexia Nervosa, a nervous condition which caused a loss of appetite which, when it lasted over three to five months, caused

Forcible Feeding For Viewers
Single channel viewers may have missed a marvellous documentary style drama, “Shoulder To Shoulder” on B.B.C., which depicted the agony of forcible feeding on Suffragettes fighting for woman’s votes in the 1900s.
Based on a real story, it showed how a sheltered Lady Lytton, sister of an Earl, joined less favoured
womenfolk on hunger strikes that led to forcible feeding on Suffragettes fighting for woman’s votes in the 1900s.

SHROVE TUESDAY IN KERRY. Attempted Marriage Under Police Protection
On Tuesday morning as early as six o’clock a number of persons, principally females, assembled outside the gate of the Listowel Parish Church, with the object of witnessing a marriage of a labouring man from Ballybunion road, to a fair enchantress whose affections he had captured for some time. But as in other cases, the state of true love did not run smoothly, for at the time appointed for the sacred ceremony, a third party arrived on the scene in the person of a very sturdy young damsel, who there and then claimed prior claim to the young man, while mostly at the same time a fourth party in the shape of a man arrived on the scene and threw himself at the feet of the intending bride, and with all the ardour of a lovelorn juvenile In his teens, besought her to be his. The marriage however, did not take place, though it was rumoured afterwards that the males in question entered Into negotiations with a view to coming to a satisfactory matrimonial arrangement with the fair dames—something in the shape of a matrimonial four-hand reel

An extraordinary event happened in Ardfert some few nights ago, when William Cleary, a labourer and a man of powerful physique from Springfield Ballyheigue, ran amuck. He rushed from his home with nothing on him but his shirt and after running a distance of five or six miles arrived at the Ardfert police barracks. He smashed in the fanlight and strange to say, being the huge man he managed to squeeze his body half way through the aperture. All the time he kept shouting for the police to shoot him that the Devil was in him, and kept his tongue protruded, stating that It was the Devil’s tall. After a desperate struggle the police managed to secure him. He only had one slight cut In the palm of his right hand, and considering the position he was in his escape was providential.
The following day he was committed to Killarney Lunatic Asylum.

It all started with a childhood passion for family history. Our Founder and CEO Gilad Japhet developed an interest in genealogy at a young age, even impressing his middle-school teacher with an exemplary genealogy project at age 13 — and it was that passion that led him to start MyHeritage 20 years ago. In the two decades that followed, the company has transformed from a scrappy startup in a Bnei Atarot barn with chickens clucking in the yard to an international phenomenon with millions of users and 550+ employees spread across multiple continents.

WORKOUTS
The overarching principle of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is that the harder you do an exercise, the more physiological benefits you accrue; thus, by incorporating intervals of higher intensity efforts in your workouts, you can get more fitness bang for your buck in less time.
When we think about HIIT, we tend to think about going absolutely nuts on a fan bike or doing all-out sprints.
