Athea GAA

Intermediates:

Athea Intermediates had a brilliant win over Mountcollins last week on a scoreline of (4-15) to (0-7). There was a huge crowd of supporters which was indeed great to see. Athea have now secured Division 2 status for next year. Well done.

Páirc na nGael:

The pitch is being used to it’s “full capacity” at the moment and is looking fabulous – with many outsiders giving it great ‘compliments’ – which is indeed good to hear.

Fundraising:

I’m mentioning it now so everyone can be thinking about it over the next couple of months – it’s “brainstorming”. You might put your heads in motion and come up with another idea for the Autumn/Winter months – whether it be a concert of some type, some popular musician or band to come to Athea or maybe those who took part in the ‘Lip-Sync’ last time around might think up something to raise funds to further reduce the pitch debt, even a battle of “the townlands” in Athea – “a country and western themed hoolie” or even a ‘Strictly come dancing’ night – all ideas will be scrutinized.

The pitch debt is now just below the €40,000 mark thanks to everyone’s support and thanks to all who bought tickets for the ongoing ‘500 Draw’ – you can still be in with a chance for the remaining 7 draws at €10 a month or €70 in total. Phone me on 087-1233361 or contact any GAA committee member.

U16s:

Athea 4–05     Dromin/Athlacca Banogue 1–1
Our U16s suffered their first defeat of the championship when they lost to Dromin Athlacca Banogue in Banogue on Monday evening last. The home side started brilliantly out scoring us eight points to one in the first twenty minutes of the game. Conor McAuliffe with the Athea point from play. We brought ourselves back into the game when we scored two quick fire goals, one from John Sexton and the second from Evan Wallace. The home side upped their game again, kicking seven unanswered points and this would have been a lot more but for some great saves by TJ Murphy in goals. John Sexton got our second point of the game just before half time to leave the score at the break, Athea 2-02, Dromin Athlacca Banogue 0-15. We played much better in the second half and narrowed the gap to four points when John Sexton converted a penalty after two minutes. A point for the home side was cancelled out when Brandon Finucane rose the white flag for Athea. Dromin Athlacca Banogue got their second point of the half to increase their lead, but the gap would be narrowed to two points shortly after, when John Sexton scored his third goal of the game. Both sides exchanged two points each as we entered the closing stages, but as Athea pushed up to try to find the winning score, we were caught at the back and the home team scored a late goal to leave the full time score, Athea 4-05, Dromin Athlacca Banogue 1-19.

Team: TJ Murphy, Jack Hunt, Alex McEldowney, Eoin Sheahan, Colin Broderick, David O’Connor, Jamie O’Mahony, Conor McAuliffe, Aidan Curry, Michael Tierney, TJ White, Gavin Ambrose, Andrew O’Riordan, John Sexton, Evan Wallace, Subs: Brandon Finucane, Ryan Greaney, TJ Hunt & Luke Gleeson.

U16s:

Our U16s played their first league match at home on Monday evening last, when they played Dromcollogher/Broadford in a cracker of a match. The visitors got off to a great start scoring 2-03 to our own 0-1 which was scored by Michael Tierney. We got back into the game when John Sexton scored his first goal of the night following a great pass from Michael Tierney. The visitors dominated the rest of the half, scoring six points without reply and a late free from John Sexton left Athea trailing by ten points at the break on a score line of Athea 1-02, Dromcollogher/Broadford 2-09. The second half was a different story as our young team upped their game and fought their way back into the match. The comeback started when John Sexton tapped over a free after the very impressive Jack O’Connor was fouled. Three minutes later, Jack was fouled again and John Sexton rose the white flag to narrow the gap. David O’Connor was the mastermind of many of the Athea attacks and popped up to score a wonderful point from thirty yards out, after playing a one- two with TJ White. The visitors responded with a point of their own, but when Jack O’Connor scored a brilliant goal to the delight of the home crowd, it lifted the whole team and they drove on from there till the final whistle. TJ Murphy was having a fantastic game in goals and the backs were tackling as if their lives depended on it. Dromcollogher/Broadford scored their second point of the half, but Athea’s response was fantastic again as John Sexton got his second goal of the night. Another point from the visitors was quickly cancelled out when Athea got their fourth goal, Brandon Finucane’s shot was well saved by the goalkeeper, but Jack O’Connor was on hand to rifle the ball to the back of the net to cut the lead to a single point. With three minutes left on the clock it was all to play for,  we were awarded a penalty when Jack O’Connor was fouled in the box. John Sexton made no mistake finding the back of the net to leave us two points ahead against all the odds. Dromcollogher/ Broadford threw everything they had at Athea in the final minutes, but our team stood strong and the visitors could only manage a single point before referee Frank Minogue blew the final whistle.  The final score read Athea 5-05, Dromcollogher/Broadford 2-13. This leave Athea at the top of the table after three rounds of matches and hopefully this young team will continue to excel as the championship progresses.     Panel: T.J Murphy, Eoin Sheahan, Alex McEldowney, Jack Hunt, Colin Broderick, Jamie O’Mahony, David O’Connor, Aidan Curry, TJ White, Brian English, Jack O’Connor, Andrew O’Riordan, Gavin Ambrose, John Sexton, Michael Tierney Subs: Thomas McEnery, Brandon Finucane, Evan Wallace, TJ Hunt and Danny Brady.

Cúl Camp:

Our Cúl camp began on Monday last with a record number of children attending, all having fun and learning the skills of Gaelic football. More details to follow next week.

Well done to the Limerick U16s and their management and especially to our own Jack O’ Connor who was part of the Limerick U16 Football team that reached the Cup final in the John O’ Donovan Memorial Munster U16 football Tournament in Rathkeale on Saturday last. The team recorded a big victory over Waterford, before a hard fought two point win over Tipperary in the semi-final. Unfortunately they lost out to Kerry South in the final, but it was great to see our Club was represent by Jack who played very well when he was introduced to the game.

Div 2 Co. League:

Our Intermediates travelled to Ballysteen on Tuesday evening last to meet the tough opposition there in Div. 2 of the County League. All knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game and the result showed this in the end with Ballysteen winning by a big margin of (5-11) to (1-13). However Athea must not be disillusioned. Here’s to better times ahead.

Junior B:

The Junior B team lined out against St. Kieran’s on Friday night in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale. Athea were up by 7 pts at half-time and things were looking good. However, at the final whistle we were so unlucky to lose by just 1 measly point (2-11) to (2-10). This was ‘Round 3’ of the Junior B Championship.

The Mayo flags are flying in Dirreen and Lower Athea following their win against Derry recently in an exciting game!.

Draw:

Next weekend sees the 1st draw of the ‘500 Club Draw’ taking place at the Top of the Town – there are just a few tickets left – be in with a chance and buy one – you could be lucky. Fully paid up members are in for a €1,000 extra prize.

Thanks:

The club wishes to thank sincerely Kiely Bros. Construction in Birmingham (who have Athea connections) for their most generous contribution to the club. It is very much appreciated by Athea GAA.
