Knockdown News – 26/3/24

by Peg Prendeville

In spite of the miserable weather last Sunday a huge crowd turned out for the Patrick Langan Memorial Vintage Day. As usual there was a great atmosphere, tons of food, loads of prizes as well as all the tractors and cars. No doubt there will be lots of photos and reports in the local papers. Well done, once again, to the small, but totally dedicated, committee for all the hard work put into the preparation.

I attended the play in Athea last Saturday night and was very impressed with the acting. There were great laughs and a few interesting twists in the play “Turning Mammy”. Very enjoyable.

It is all systems go for the Abha Bhán Players as they put last minute touches to the set for their play which is totally different in content but has many laughs also. The group recently purchased and installed permanent stage lights in the Hall which will be there for future events and productions. These make this great facility in our parish even more precious. Tickets are selling fast for the four performances of A TOMB WITH A VIEW on April 5, 6, 12 & 13, so if you have not already booked your ticket do so now on

086-8458821 or 069 82106 ( business hours)

Cash only. No card.

I was talking to George Langan during the week and wish to bring your attention to his website

www.langangeorge45.com.

Here you will find a fascinating index to all things connected to Athea. George has spent years writing down dates and important events and he has them all catalogued in alphabetical order. If you want an interesting way to pass a rainy day then this is what you need. He tells me he has boxes of stuff to be recorded yet. A very interesting project.

In the midst of all the drama Easter has crept up on top of us. I wish you all a lovely weekend. Let’s hope

the sun finds its way through these awful clouds of rain. Will the land ever dry again?

Junior Football League

Round 2 Athea 1-6 Mountcollins 1-7
Round 3 Athea  2-12  Feenagh/Kilmeedy 0-3
We played 2 games last week, both away from home. On Wednesday under lights we lost to Mountcollins by a single point in a game that we at least should have drawn. On Saturday last against an understrength Feenagh/Kilmeedy team we had a comprehensive win. We led at half time by 2-6 to 0-1, after a great team performance. The second  half wasn’t as impressive but a 12 point win was a good reflection of our performance.

Abbeyfeale Notes – 26/3/24

by Marian Harnett

COFFEE MORNING FOR THE LATE FR. TIM GALVIN’S MISSION:  Fran Leahy originally from New St., Abbeyfeale and who has gone out to help in the schools that Fr. Tim set up,  over several years is returning again in May for a 6 month term. She will be covering all her expenses herself but her friends are planning to hold a coffee morning on Saturday, April 13 from 11am – 2pm in St. Ita’s Day Care Centre to raise funds for the running of the schools.  We’d appreciate some home baking and spot prizes for a mega raffle.  Further information from Fran on 087 9473333.WEST LIMERICK SINGING CLUB:  The next Singing Session will take place in The Ramble Inn, Church Street on Friday, April 5 from 9pm.  Everyone welcome.

NEWCASTLEWEST REPAIR CAFÉ: As repair cafés are volunteer led, we need your help to kickstart this initiative locally, so please email Andi at [email protected] if you are interested in finding out more about how you can lend a hand, full support will be given.
What is a repair café?  Repair Cafés are free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things (together). In the Repair Café, you’ll find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. On clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, appliances, toys, et cetera. You’ll also find local expert volunteers, with repair skills in all kinds of fields.
Visitors bring their broken items from home. Together with the specialists they start making their repairs in the Repair Café. It’s an ongoing learning process to empower people to fix instead of binning items, and fantastic for keeping more household goods in circulation and out of the rubbish tips! If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Or you can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. You can also get inspired at the reading table – by leafing through books on repairs and DIY. There are over 2,500 Repair Cafes worldwide, and you can find out more by visiting https://www.repaircafe.org/en/ Taking place on the last Wednesday of the month from March onwards.
